Chapter 37

All the team was there when Jack walked into the conference room. He slammed his laptop on the desk and dropped into his chair.

“What’s the matter, Jack?” Jes asked.

“My friend at the center was tortured and killed,” Jack said.

“Jack, I’m so sorry,” Jes said.

Jack paused and looked at each one of them in turn. “I want each of you to reconsider your contracts. No matter what you choose going forward you will get paid the full amount. But, if you want out, now is the time.”

“I'm sorry about your friend, Jack. But I’m staying, Dylan said. “I know you and Ajax can protect us.”

“Thanks, Dylan.”

Jack turned to Sophie, waiting for her reply.

“Stay,” she said, nodding her head.

“Thanks, Sophie,” Jack said. “Jes. What about you?”

“I'll stay. Dylan is small enough I can throw him in front of the bullets,” Jes said.

A small smile formed on Sophie's lips.

Jack nodded. “Maddie has some evidence left to get. In the meantime, we are getting close to the attack day. Jes, got an update?”

“I hacked the alarm systems and can control them now,” Jes said. “But I can’t really test it so we are going in blind. As for doing the security camera update, Dylan says he will finish the Trojan and the virus this week. Then it is up to Maddie to install it.”

“Dylan, can they find what Evan placed on the servers?” Jack asked.

“I doubt it,” Dylan said. “So far it is just a text file. On the date I set, it will compile itself into a worm and then attack. Anti-virus scanners don’t detect text files so we should be safe.”

“Good,” Jack said. “And I promise to do better in the future,” Jack said.

“It doesn’t sound like Evan was your fault, Jack,” Dylan said.

“I promise you all no one else gets hurt on my watch,” Jack said looking around at the table. “Ajax and I will make sure you are safe. In the meantime, we still have work to do so let’s go do it.”

The team stood and started leaving the room.

“Wait,” Jack said before they reached the door. “Sophie, why are you limping.”

“Hurt my toe,” Sophie said.

“How?” Jack asked.

“It’s dark in my room and I got up to use the bathroom,” she said. “The bed leg hit me.”

“I will have Safina get you a night light,” Jack said. “And I want everyone to have night lights from now on.”

“Jack,” Jes said. “Relax a bit. We are going to be safe. Sophie just had a boo-boo.”

“Yup. A boo-boo,” Sophie said. “That’s all.”

Jack watched them leave the room and thought about Evan again.
