Chapter 10

The small ceremony in September awarding Alex the two medals she was being given was a modest event in the offices of the SOE with Bertram Potter presiding, and a minor official from the War Office present. Bertram made a short speech, and his respect for Alex and affection for her shone through. The War Office representative pinned the medals on her, and shook her hand. No one else was there to see it and she was sorry Richard and her parents couldn’t be there. Marlene served port and cookies afterward, which Betram had purchased himself to make the occasion more festive.

He spoke of Alex’s courage and passion for her country, her determination to accomplish every mission, no matter how dangerous or challenging. He said that she had never refused or balked at a single assignment, and had gone behind enemy lines again and again in frightening conditions, without a moment’s hesitation. He said she had been one of their best operatives, and richly deserved the medals and the appreciation of her country. He spoke of her loyalty, her bravery and willingness to do everything in her power and beyond to help win the war. Alex was deeply touched by what he said.

Bertram acknowledged that there were too many unsung and unknown heroes like her, who had acted in secret, followed every order, risked their lives, and in too many cases lost them to the enemy. It had been a costly war for the entire country.

Alex had already agreed to come in to the office twice a week to help Bertram organize his mountain of papers, so there was no need to say goodbye to him. And she was sad to hear that there was already talk of closing the office. There was no reason for the SOE to exist once the war was over, and there were no further assignments anticipated. Their operatives had already been disbanded. From now on, MI5 would be overseeing any intelligence missions domestically, and MI6 would handle anything international. SOE had become obsolete in peacetime, which made everyone who had worked for them sad to know that it would soon disappear into the annals of history. It made putting Bertram’s files into the archives in good order that much more important, and Alex was happy to help him do it.

After the ceremony, which Richard couldn’t attend, he took her to dinner at Rules, where they hadn’t been since the war. It was their favorite restaurant. They had just found a small apartment in Kensington, and rented it furnished for six months, since they knew they would be leaving for Richard’s first assignment in the spring. They still didn’t know where it would be. The country was struggling to get on its feet, with massive rebuilding and restoration projects to face. In many areas, the city had been gutted, as had others in Europe. Germany was in shambles, and Italy not much better. France had suffered less damage by capitulating so quickly to the enemy.
