Chapter 29

“I think we’ve searched the entire city,” Ronald said.

He was right, we’d literally been up and down every road in the city limits, and that included driving by the McLaughlin mobile home a few times.

“Alright, let’s move south to Smyrna,” I said.

We searched in the same manner and came up with the same negative results. We did a slow drive-by of Mona’s Paradise, but I did not dare drive into the parking lot. I did not know if it was under surveillance or what, but I didn’t want to take the risk.

We had left Smyrna and were heading back to LaVergne with the idea of scanning a location for possibly mounting a surveillance camera around the McLaughlin mobile home when my phone rang from a number I didn’t recognize.

“This is Brittany, from Starbucks,” she said when I answered.

I eyed Ronald. “Hey, Brittany.”

“I’ve been talking it over with my friend. Her uncle is a lawyer, so she knows all about these things,” she said.

“I can assure you I’m not asking you to do anything illegal,” I replied.

“I know,” she rejoined.

“Okay, good. If you see this man again and get the information, give me a call and I’ll pay you immediately,” I said.

“My friend said you’re legally required to pay me a fee,” she said.

“A fee? A fee for what?” I asked.

“For my work. I will be performing a service for you by watching for this man. So, that means I’ll be on the clock, and you’ll need to pay me for my time,” she said.

I frowned, wondering what in the world she was thinking.

“Let me get this straight. In addition to the reward I offered, you’re demanding that I pay you simply for watching out for this guy, is that what you’re saying?”

“Yep, that’s our contract,” she said.

“Yeah, no, I’m going to decline that offer. The reward still stands though. In fact, I’ll double it, but that’s all I’ll do.”

“Hang on a sec,” she said and muted me. After a few seconds, she came back on the line.

“My friend said we’ve already entered into a contract, and you can’t breach it, otherwise I can sue you for a bunch of money.”

I didn’t know whether to laugh or tell her and her friend they were idiots. I tried for a more diplomatic response.

“Do your friend a favor and tell her that having an uncle who is a lawyer does not magically transform her into a legal expert. If you spot the man I’m looking for and you want the reward, be sure to give me a call. Take care, Brittany.”

When I disconnected the call, I glanced over at Ronald. “Did you hear that nonsense?”

“Yeah, she sounds like a nut. I bet she smokes weed.”

I chuckled. “That must be it.”

We ultimately decided that it would be too risky to put a camera anywhere around the trailer, there was simply too much pedestrian traffic around there. We were frustrated and decided to head home.

“You want anything special for dinner?” I asked Ronald once we arrived back at my house.
