Chapter 16

A jangling at the door and hammering brought them back to the moment. Suddenly the side door opened out to the cement slab.

“Dad!” Kelsey shrieked. He cut the tape off Brendon. He wrapped his arms around Kelsey so tight they could hardly breathe.

“Brendon? Come here.” He gathered them both in and smothered them with relief.

“Let’s see what’s going on,” Kelsey said. It took a few minutes for their eyes to adjust to the semi-darkness again inside the closed building. Walking carefully so as not to slip and fall on the slick gasoline now mixed with foam, Kelsey said, “I know where the light switch is. Phew! It stinks in here.”

“Don’t touch the light switch,” a man said. Kelsey turned around and faced a fireman in full attire dragging a foaming hose. His headlight lit his path.

“Oh,” she said. “I get it. We need to get out of here.”

“This is burning my lungs anyway.” Brendon started to cough.

They hurried as fast as they could to the shattered front door and crawled through. The yard was swarming with firemen. Overhead a police helicopter hovered in large circles.

Brendon started to laugh. “Hey, Kelsey, guess who was the first of the first responders? And I’ll bet I know who pushed the panic button.” Kelsey stared at the bus, thought about it, then she doubled over with laughter.

“Never fool with a friar!”

From around the back of the building the big dog came bounding, tail wagging, turning joyful flips and occasionally barking. Behind him came Brother Frank, Brother Stephen, another friar and a police officer. The dog ran to the policeman and pulled a rope tug-toy from his hand, twirled around, shook it wildly, ran a playful circle and brought it back. The policeman tossed it in the air and the happy dog leaped in the air to grab it.

“Come and meet me friends, now Ian. Kelsey and Brendon, this here is me nephew, Ian. He’s a fine police officer as you can see. And you met Simeon his dog who found you first. That’s his job, you know. Ian, these two are Kelsey and Brendon, the young cycling detectives I told you all about.”

From the side of the building where the Jerr-Dan sat partially loaded, the EMTs came pushing and pulling a gurney.

“Craig!” Kelsey took off on a run. “Wait, please wait a minute.” She caught up to them even though she was limping on her ankle. “Craig, are you okay? Is he okay?”

“I’m fine, just fine. A bit of a headache. I think it was a close one. And I think it was only you two who saved me. Thanks. We’ll be in touch.” His voice was barely audible. The EMTs slid the gurney into the ambulance, the legs folding into place. One medic went into the ambulance with him and began setting up an IV. He clipped a meter onto Craig’s finger and turned on some monitoring devices. The driver closed the door. Brendon stood beside Kelsey rubbing his wrists as they watched the ambulance maneuver through the cattle gate and onto the road.
