Damon unbuttoned his suit jacket, removed it and laid it neatly on the back of the sofa. He observed everyone as he walked around and took a seat opposite Tristan. Once again, Tristan was lost in thought, switching his attention absently between the TV and Melody, who was now nestled into the crook of Tyler’s neck, yet somehow still leaning back against Isaac’s shoulder. Her feet were in Jesse’s lap and he was gently massaging the foot on her sore leg. The four of them looked perfectly at home, yet to anyone on the outside, this level of affection might seem strange.

For weeks he’d watched the four of them struggle and worry about Melody. He’d often had to get creative in ways to distract them as they took turns Skyping with her. Sometimes, the sound of her voice carrying over the bus almost felt like she was right there with them. He wondered how she ever had any time to herself when she was constantly being called by one of them. He too had spent his fair share of time with her, but he also had the luxury of flying to Lake Geneva to see her whenever he had enough time between venues. Those moments alone with her were becoming increasingly dear to him. He felt selfish somehow, like he was keeping her in a castle that he alone had access too. He had provided the best of everything he could for her. Top security, a therapist and companion in the form of Beth Reyes, a personal chef, personal shopper, anything he could think of. He’d even had the doctors come to her so she didn’t have to leave the house. The media scrutiny had let up somewhat, but since Melody still hadn’t been seen in public, he knew the paparazzi were out there somewhere looking to get at her. He wondered who else was out there looking to get to her. They still hadn’t found her aunt and uncle, nor anyone from the organization that kidnapped her. The two men who had actually taken her were both dead, so no more information could be gained from them other than their rap sheets. Detective Davidson had explained they were lower level thugs tied to a Russian organized crime family.

For the most part, Melody seemed content. The guys did their best to keep her occupied with movies and books they kept sending her, and playing games on the bus with her via their PS4 and Wi-Fi connection. Despite all that, he could see her loneliness had been increasing as their separation played out. This little trip home was needed by all of them, to reconnect via something other than electronically. They needed tread carefully here. They also needed to have another serious conversation soon about the future, and how things would be handled going forth. Autumn was in full swing now as the trees around the lake exploded in an array bright colors. Damon glanced out the window and felt a peace he hadn’t felt in weeks settle over him despite everything.
