Chapter

Twenty-One

“If she isn’t my cousin, why is she doing this?” I asked Megan. I was deeply disturbed. Mainly because I’d been taken advantage of more than once, and I didn’t know what she wanted or what she was up to. It didn’t make sense she’d be doing this if she wasn’t my cousin.

“I don’t know, but it has something to do with that ritual.” Megan looked devious. I loved that about her. “I took a few pictures. Let’s see what we can find out about her and it.”

I had the books, so first, I found the pages from Megan’s photos, and opened the books to the corresponding ones. I still wondered how she knew what was in the books if she wasn’t a cousin of mine, but Lucy Rose had witch friends and those witch friends could have known this and passed it to their children. Damn, I hated witches. They’d been the bane of my existence for some time now.

We studied the pages and what the book said. It wasn’t much. That wasn’t going to stop Megan, though. That was why she had done research for me at my old company. She was tenacious, like a bulldog with a bone.

“I’ve got this. Stop hovering.” She waved me away. I laughed and left.

It’d been a long day. I had chaotic kitsunes and a lying psychic who might be a witch. I had a baby unicorn and a human ex-vampire, not to mention the ongoing issue of the griffinettes that was not being dealt with. I closed my eyes and rolled my head to loosen my neck. I needed to go see Brightfeather. This was something that would bite us if we didn’t deal with it. I walked to the kitchen and grabbed a diet Coke from the fridge, then I called my cat and went to wait for him on the back porch. It was mostly dark. I could fit in one more task.

Mr. Mittens came strolling up to me. I don’t know where he came from, but he always seemed to appear from the direction I wasn’t watching. It was probably a cat thing.

He blinked his large blue eyes at me.

“You ready to check in with Brightfeather?”

He perked up some. He really did enjoy the griffin. You promised to bring meat for the little ones.

Crap. I’d forgotten. “What should I grab?”

Hmpf. I’ll be back.

I made to stop him, but what was a little while longer? I wondered what he was going to kill for the hatchlings.

I sat on the back steps and scrolled through my phone. I watched a few cat videos. About twenty minutes later, Mr. Mittens showed up at the edge of the woods in his Splintercat form. I walked over to him. I was sure he was trying to avoid notice from any guests. When I got nearer, I saw he had a deer at his feet.

He picked it up when I grew near, and we realm walked to Brightfeather’s nest.

“Brightfeather,” I called out.

You may enter, Brigid.
