Chapter

Sixteen

I hadn’t had a chance to replace my car. I should probably pick up a spare at the rate I was going through them. One was smashed by a crazy, hateful witch, and the new one by a dragon that didn’t realize how big he was. Since Megan was on second shift again, she let me borrow hers.

Before I left, I asked her about doing research. She paled slightly, but then clenched her teeth and said, “Yes, I’ll find a way to bring those bastards down.” That worked for me. She had spent more time on the supernatural web than I had, so I figured if there was real information out there, she’d find it. I was much better at software design than this type of research. She had worked in research for Evan’s and my company, so this was right up her alley.

I climbed in Megan’s car and took a deep breath before I pushed the ignition button. My palms were sweaty on the wheel as I drove down the long drive to turn right onto Highway 101.

No matter how much my mind raced, I couldn’t come up with a reason to explain the vampire’s hatred of me. He and his tiny enforcer, Bella, were the first vampires I’d ever interacted with, outside of my ex-vampire guest, to my knowledge.

I pulled into the small gravel parking lot of the Blue Heron and parked. The large white barn shaped building fit the dairy town. It had a large circular blue sign that took up the whole top half of one end of the building. It was a blue circle, with a heron in the middle, quite distinctive. Alongside the building was some rusted logging equipment and a small petting zoo. On most sunny days, you could see children with their families out enjoying the animals. Today was not a bright sunny or warm day. I guess that made it a perfect vampire day.

I sighed and walked in. On the left was a counter where they sold chocolates and ice cream, and bit furth back was where they hosted wine tastings. The Blue Heron focused on French cheese mainly, so you could also do a cheese tasting, something I enjoyed immensely. I walked to the back and turned right towards the deli. I’d never met the master vamp, but I recognized him immediately. The building was full of locals and some tourists, even though it was well before tourist season. It was crowded, but the area around the vamp was empty—like people sensed a threat deep in their lizard brains and avoided it. I headed straight at him.

He smiled a dead smile at me and stood when I approached. He had manners when he wasn’t threatening me. Go figure. He pulled out my chair as well. I thanked him because I had manners, too. We examined the menu and went up to the counter to order. Mr. Constantine ordered wine for the table. I almost refused but figured it was best to be pleasant.
