Chapter Fourteen

Yawning, I poured a large cup of coffee and just stood there in my kitchen, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. After I’d taken Stella out at the crack of dawn, I’d crawled back into bed and slept for another four hours, thankful Holly and Jade had the café under control.

I picked up the mug and was just about to take a sip when I heard footsteps behind me.

“You slept late,” Bo said as he grabbed the coffeepot.

I just nodded and sucked in a mouthful of sweet java.

“Damn, Pyper, you look like hell. Are you getting sick?” he asked, concern in his tone. “You’re so pale your ghosts are going to think you’re one of them.”

His words hit me like a ton of bricks, and without thinking, I spit the coffee out, spraying it all over the sink.

“Whoa.” He backed up, still holding the coffeepot. “What was that about?”

I just shook my head, my hand going to my abdomen.

He caught the movement and his eyes went wide with shock. “Are you… Holy shit. Does Julius know?”

I shook my head, grimacing. “I don’t even know.”

“You haven’t taken a test yet?”

I shook my head again. “It’s probably a false alarm. We’re not… I mean, we’re not planning anything right now.” My voice trailed off, and I squeezed my eyes shut. I did not want to be having this conversation with my little brother. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust him. I did. I just hadn’t had any time to figure out how I felt about the possibility of becoming a mother in eight months.

His expression went from wide-eyed shock to something softer, something happy and joyful. “You’d make a great mom.”

Tears stung my eyes and I grabbed his hand, squeezing my appreciation.

“Oh, no. Not you too. I’ve had enough of crying females for one twenty-four-hour period.” Even though his words made him sound like a panicked male, he was laughing as he spoke, and he reached out, pulling me into a hug.

I wrapped my arms around my brother and looked up at him, smiling through my tears. “Sorry. I don’t know what’s gotten into me.”

“If you really are pregnant, I’m going to say Julius.” His grin widened and he laughed harder as I punched him in the arm. “Bully.”

“Jackass.” I rested my head on his shoulder and hugged him back. “Don’t say anything to Julius, okay? I don’t want to tell him until I know for sure.”

“You got it, sis,” he said softly.

I sucked in a breath, then stepped back and gave him a lopsided smile. “You’re not so bad at that.”

“What? Needling my sister?”

“No, being the one someone leans on when she needs it.”

“That’s true,” Reagan said from the doorway.

I spun, my heart pounding. Had she heard what we’d just been talking about? Was she now the third person to know I might be pregnant while Julius was still in the dark? “Did you… Um, how long have you been standing there?”

“Just a second. I wasn’t eavesdropping if that’s what you mean,” she said with a small smile.
