Chapter Forty-Seven

Waukesha, WI

He was awake, but he did not move, and he hardly breathed. Instead, he listened to everything and anything. Billy, on his side and snuggled up against him. George still had his arm around his chest.

He could hear Jasmine panting on the rug next to the bed, and George knew Jasmine waited for a signal.

George was not sure what it was that woke him up. There was not a defining noise, or was there? Perhaps a feeling? Part of a dream?

His grandfather had not come to him. He was sure of that. Neither had his littlest brother, Robert, nor had Brian’s brother, Brad. George concluded that the threat, if there was a threat, was not imminent.

Still ...

He crawled out of bed and tucked the sheet, blanket, and comforter around Billy to keep him warm. Billy had not moved, still sound asleep.

George slid his feet into his moccasins, pulled on a sweatshirt, grabbed his knife and leather scabbard, and walked to the door. Jasmine stood, tail wagging, hoping to tag along. George gave her a signal to stay, and without a sound, she lay back down on the rug. It was only his imagination, but it looked like she was sulking. He smiled, opened the door, and shut it to a crack.

He stood in the hallway and looked left and right. No one or nothing, except for Momma laying on the landing at the top of the stairs, protecting the family from whatever and whomever.

No sounds other than normal night sounds from the big house and from the wind outside.

George tiptoed down the hall, put his ear to Jeremy’s and Vicky’s closed door, and heard nothing. He stepped kiddie-corner to Randy’s room where Randy and Bobby were asleep. The door was shut tight, so George opened it and walked in.

Randy slept in his normal pose. Arms spread to the side, one knee up, and head off the pillow. Bobby was curled in a ball against him.

George smiled. Every night, at just about any time of night, Randy would be found like this.

George gave Randy a gentle nudge, and he rolled over and placed an arm protectively over Bobby. Bobby did not move. George tucked them in and left the room, closing the door behind him.

Brian’s door to the bedroom he shared with Bobby was shut. He opened it. He spied Jasper on the rug on the side of the bed just like his sister Jasmine had been in his own room.

Brett lay on his side with what looked to be an arm over Brian, who slept on his back next to him with their heads toward each other, foreheads touching. Neither moved. Both peaceful, at least on the surface. George knew both had, at times, tortured dreams and thoughts whether asleep or awake.

He tucked both in as gently as he could because he knew Brett slept so lightly a breeze might wake him, certain that a sound or a touch would.
