The Status Quo
Every time Iâve entered a classroom today, I have been off my game. I just donât know what Iâm walking into. The kids who were indifferent to me remain so (and really, indifference is not something Iâm used to), though the friendly ones seem fine. Gordo and Vin Weasel glower at me every chance they get, and I have a strong hunch theyâve told more of the guys, including the acne-scarred giant Iâll call Red, who seems to bristle when he passes me in the hall. Maybe Iâm being paranoid? Or maybe I shouldnât have offered to let Vin Weasel look in my shorts. So much for the âgirlfriendâ ruse.
The biggest change is Ernie, who ends up padding around behind me to half of my classes as if I am his best friend. I already have a bestie, and they bear no resemblance to my new roommate. Except, they both always carry a device: Nix an iPhone, Ernie that handheld game thingy. Granted, Nix is decades away, but with my status here still so uncertain, Iâm not sure Iâm ready to be paired with Ernie in everyoneâs minds.
Iâve been counting the minutes until lunch when heâll hang with JJ, the wallet girl, and I wonât have to babysit. I know that makes me sound like a dick, but Iâm tired. I couldnât sleep last night. There was so much to turn over: the sparks in the paint closet, Gordo and Vin Weasel treating me like the next Chaz as fodder for taunting, and all the what-ifs.
What if Iâm here forever? Will I grow up alongside my mom? And then what? Iâll never know Nix or Cheng or be me. Take my advice: donât time travel; it messes with your mind. A joke, obvi.
Time traveling, at least in my case, is like being gayâso not a choice. Today I canât be the-sunâll-come-out-tomorrow-AnnieâIâm more Maleficent-at-a-baby-shower. Trust me, itâs a whole mood.
Chaz and Leeza flag me from a different table than usual. Itâs the only round one in the cafeteria, and itâs the opposite end of our usual seats. Worse, itâs close to Mrs. Buckman, who is Lunch Monitor, too (yay for a skill set!), and I donât want her hearing anything too juicy. Why did they have to move? I know Iâve only been here five days, but I like a routine, especially one that cements my in-group status. A glance back at âourâ table tells the whole story. Gordo, Vin Weasel, Red, and a few more of their buddies have taken it over. Itâs not accidental. As soon as I pass by with my tray, Vin Weasel loudly says to Gordo, âYouâre right, this new table is better. Guess itâs ours now.â Iâm a few steps away by the time Gordo says something in Spanish, and I am this close to turning around and letting him wear my lunch, but I hear a splash and a ripple of laughter.
Of course, itâs Ernie. Heâs trying to wipe up chocolate milk
