Dante bent over and checked her eyes. “She’s out.” Then her pulse. “She’s alive. Check for the blue bag, hurry! You know the cops could be here in a few minutes. Hurry!”

“Damn, you could have killed her,” Gabriel said.

Dante was already moving down the steps, slowly, hopping on his good leg as much as he could, with Ava over his shoulder. His balls hurt, and his leg was killing him. He opened the front door of her condo, left it open, and, seeing no cars or people, limped across the narrow street as fast as he could with her dead weight. He reminded himself of what the doctor had told him: There would be no permanent damage if he walked on it. It was more of what his threshold for pain was. Sliding the van door open, he flopped her in. Then he zip-tied her feet and slammed the door. Dante limped as fast as he could, ignoring his surroundings, and burst through the door, then went up the steps to the second floor.

“Gabriel! We gotta go! I got Sebastian! Get the other guy!” Dante ignored the tremendous amount of blood. He slipped a little, which sent a stabbing pain through his leg, but he gritted his teeth and tried to ignore it. He threw Sebastian on his shoulder, got to the top of the stairs, and started down. “Now! Right now!”

“Right behind you,” Gabriel said.

Dante didn’t look over his shoulder. He struggled down the steps as fast as he could. “Shut the door behind you.” As he limped across the street, he heard a siren in the distance, so he threw Sebastian in the van. Then Gabriel tossed in his man. Both bodies were partially on top of Ava. Dante and Gabriel jumped into the van, pulled off their masks, and drove out slowly.

After stopping at the corner, Gabriel looked in his side mirror. “Cops.”

In his own mirror, Dante saw the flashing lights of a police cruiser around the corner a few blocks back. “I see them. Just drive normal. They have no idea it’s us.”

Gabriel turned right, and they were quickly out of sight. “That was close.”

“Too close.” Dante kept watch in the side mirror.

“I think we made it, but that was a trainwreck,” Gabriel said. “What about all the blood?”

“Unless they have Sebastian and the new guy’s DNA on file, they can’t identify them. I’m not bleeding. What about you?”

“Nope.”

“What was the new guy’s name?” Gabriel asked.

“I’m not sure. Mauricio, I think.”

“Too bad. Mauricio didn’t even get started,” Gabriel said. “And Sebastian, I liked him.”

“Yeah, we’re losing too many guys,” Dante said. “Back to the bloody mess at her place. We should be good. We wore gloves, so no fingerprints. I didn’t see any cameras, and we wore masks just in case.”

Dante kept checking the side mirror, but he knew he was safe unless they got pulled over for a traffic violation. Need to be extra careful. Hope the taillights don’t burn out.

“Shouldn’t we call Rico?” Gabriel asked.
