"What do you mean?" Nancy asked warily.

"Well, finding Erin's body and all," JefF said. "Fm sorry, I didn't mean to make light of it. It must have been awful for you." He shook his head. "I have to say, though, you have an incredible nose for danger."

"Actually, I wanted to ask you about last night," Nancy said carefully. "Remember when I bumped into you in the dorm? You said you were looking for me, but when you found me, you were in a big hurry to get away."

Jeflf seemed surprised by the question. "I got shy, I guess," he said. He added slyly, "Believe it or not, even I get tongue-tied sometimes."

Nancy felt herself blush, but this time Jeff's flattery failed to distract her. "Something weird happened right after you left," she said. "Judy and I discovered that somebody had ransacked her room. You didn't see anybody in the hallway, did you?"

"I don't think so," Jeff said. "But then, I was kind of in a hurry."

Nancy didn't believe a word of what he had said. "Well, it doesn't matter. They're dusting Judy's room for prints right now. We should have a better idea of who was in the room very soon," she told him.

JefF grabbed Nancy's right arm. "Listen, Nancy, I know you and Judy are friends," he said. His voice was low and shaky, and Nancy thought he seemed much less confident. "But Judy isn't
