Danielle stared up at me with such sweet sincerity in her eyes that I had to catch my breath. I had no idea what we were one step away from, but I knew what I wanted it to be.

A future.

I’d been waylaid by the simple, honest sentiment, but she’d gone out of her way to not tell me the truth of her words. She was still hiding from me and I couldn’t blame her, but I was going to do everything in my power to erase the past just like I’d buried the stupid kid who so carelessly hurt her. When she believed me, really believed me, I’d give the words back to her.

If someone held a gun to my head, I couldn’t have said why I was so certain, or how I’d fallen so hard, so fast, for someone I’d basically just met, but there it was. I’d known it the moment I laid eyes on her, naked and terrified, clutching my pocketknife in her hand, her body shaking with relief to see me. The truth of that had my heart a torn-up mess and I knew I’d do anything, anything, to protect her from the demons that lived and breathed all around us, as well as the ones that lived only in her mind.

I’d joined the Marines because protecting my country was my dream. Defending Danielle was my calling.

“I think I know,” I finally admitted. “But I don’t want to scare you off. You don’t trust me just yet, but I plan to prove myself to you.”

“But aren’t you leaving in a few days?”

“Yes, but we do live in the age of telephones and computers. We can keep in touch. If you want to.” I had to leave it up to her. It wouldn’t be fair to push my own agenda onto her life, just because I was falling for her.

“I do.”

My heart leapt with sweet relief. “Good. I’ve got a few years to make up for.”

She bit her lip, let it loose. “How about we just start over with a clean slate?”

“Sounds good to me.” I leaned so close, her features were blurry. “As long as I get to taste you again.”

I didn’t wait for her answer. I swooped in and kissed the hell out of her, silently staking my claim. Instant love, or whatever this was, might only be a fantasy, but here, in the moment, it was my reality and I was holding onto it for dear life.

She clutched my shoulders, her nails digging into my flesh. I ground my hard cock against her, making her groan. We’d been interrupted last night, but I had every intention of making it up to both of us this morning before I delved into the conversation we needed to have.

Now was for us.

I drug my lips down her throat, tasting her sleep-kissed skin.
