With some time, Elias slowly began to understand the problems that could unfold. He mingled lightly in the camp and never could rest well. He met with Elrock every day until Elrock said, “We must train you to a fine sharp edge, Elias. Mages like you need to see what they’re made of, and you haven’t even tapped your full potential. Also, we need to know. You will show us a thing or two. There are so few Sovorey Vol Ley, and most of them are concealed even to me. What I know about them is… it takes something terrible to wake them up. We have to take you to the edge, my friend.”

“The edge of what?” Elias asked.

“The edge of yourself, the edge of your power… the edge of death. We have to push you into the open deep.”

Elias did not like the sound of that.

Elrock said, “If you are gonna take on death and destruction, you have to feel the bite; you have to ingest the poison — you’re gonna have to feel what the enemy will do. You don’t want to discover that edge for the first time right before you die in battle.”

Elrock said, “I’ve seen what happens when we send a soft mage out to the brink.”

Elrock looked in Elias’ eyes, “They don’t come back, we never see them again, or we hear stories of their mangled bodies.” Elrock raised his arms and pointed to those of the village. “We’ve had some good missions, where we rally a dozen mages and take out a horde. We’ve fought conjured beasts manifest out of the ground itself with no sorcerer to be found. We’ve dissected a few sects and saved a few villages.”

Elrock looked at Elias, “But if you want to max out your potential, and truly ride the wave at the forefront of humanity, we’re looking at destruction, my friend. The worst kind. The kind that will change you forever, the kind that will take you over, and use it for itself, we’re talking summoned evil in the form of human magic, powered by energies I haven’t begun to understand.”

He put his hand on Elias’ shoulder. “For that reason, I’m obligated to set up your training, the best we have, and it won’t look like training — it’s gonna look like pure shit.”

Elrock said, “All these mages…” he looked around, “they’re gonna have to try to twist you, to take you out, to test your sense of self to the very brink.”

“If you’re strong,” said Elrock, “I’m gonna put ten more on you. This is gonna be bad, my friend. Real bad. But strong as you are, you’re green, new as a baby in battle. You have to make your choice. The choice is always yours.”

Elias felt the grave air set about him.

He didn’t say yes or no.

He slowly nodded and said, “I guess I have to think about it.” He turned and left. He went to his tent to sleep.

The next day, Elias woke up, and they were already waiting.
