HOURS LATER, AFTER the coroner drove away and two Ozark City police detectives wrapped up their first round of questions, Spalding and Howard again sat in the back kitchen of the store.

“Doesn’t look good, bro,” said Howard. “Trueno boss killed in front of your place. You’re on their list now, y’know? Cops’ll be watching you too. Anyway, it’s been a long night.” He stretched and walked toward the door. “Long day for you ahead.”

Spalding had agreed to stop past the police station for more questions. “Piece of cake,” he said. “Remember, I used to be the one asking the questions.”

He chuckled again, but his time with the Patrol seemed farther away than ever.

“By the way,” said Howard, “What was that BS about backing Tommy’s show?”

Spalding shrugged.

“Because last I heard you were scrambling to keep this place open,” said Howard.

Spalding walked over to a chair, brought back the Doogin’s Room Soundtrack.

“Look what’s on the back.”

Howard turned the album over. “Linda Jean Blevins. 4-10-85. Not long before—-”

“Before she died,” said Spalding. “And now I’ve got Tommy’s signature on the front.”

“I thought Blevins was known for not signing autographs.”

“She was a recluse. No autographs. Very few publicity photos.” Spalding opened the online auction app on his tablet. “Turns out this record is already rare enough. With Blevins’s autograph on one side and Tommy’s on the other...take a look.”

Spalding typed in the search.

“Here’s the current high bid on another copy of the record, in lesser condition and autographed by the guy who played Tommy’s dad.

Howard whistled. “Serious money there,” he said.

“Would’ve been a fair start,” said Spalding. “I’m thinking that a fair start might be something Tommy never really had,” said Howard.

Howard looked around the store. “You too. Your brother left you a clunker here. Sell that record, maybe it’ll give you a good shot with Spalding’s Groove.”

Spalding nodded.

A good shot.

It was all anybody could ask for.
