Chapter Five
"Surprise!" Her mother's face swam over her and Jane tried to bat it away. Her arm was so heavy all she managed was to slap the air. "Wake up, Sleeping Beauty."
The words were like lightning, only her mother said that to her in the mornings. "Oh shit!" Jane sat straight up. "What? When?" Looking around, she realized she was stretched on top of a picnic table surrounded by various people. Okay, so using the word "people" was stretching it, since the only humans were the firefighters, who for some reason were still there. A couple of them flirted with two of the witches, who'd transformed into blond bombshells.
One of the firemen pulled Jane's right eyelid up and shined a light in it. "Looks like she's all right. Probably fainted from the overheating while running around in the woods."
Remembering the scene before she'd fainted, Jane searched frantically for Brock. He sat a distance away on a bench with Mark and Clark. Poor guy, they were the worst ones to learn about being a were. No doubt, the first thing they briefed him on was sex. Sure enough, Clark stood up and began humping air while pretending to slap ass. "He's such an idiot!"
Her mother looked over to where she was looking. "Who? Mark or Clark?"
"Both."
Tanned and in great shape, her mother looked to be about thirty, not her actual age of close to fifty. Living a longer life was great when it came to aging slower and looking good longer. Her mother lifted a brow. "So you and the cop?"
"No. I mean, we're just getting to know each other."
Charlene laughed and pushed at Jane's shoulder. "That explains your skirt tucked in your panties." Thankfully, Jane's glare helped quiet her.
"What are you doing here Mom? I thought you guys were flying in next week."
Her father walked over and hugged her. "Hey, baby girl. Hear you got caught with your panties down.â His laughter was so hearty, she giggled, unable to stop herself.
Before she could ask more questions, her Uncle Walt insisted they eat with him and Scootie.
Jane climbed down from the table and slinked to a lawn chair. Dale was nowhere to be found. She had to find him and ask what he'd meant by stating they were mated. Of course, she should go and rescue Brock, but at the moment, she was too mortified to walk across the field to where he was still kept busy by the twins.
A Rottweiler and strange Chihuahua came up to where she sat and plopped down. Each with a rib bone, they began gnawing with gusto. For a long moment, she watched them and wondered if the small dog would turn back to his original form. It was tempting to get the witch to come and fix him, but that meant she'd have to explain that to Brock as well. The poor man had been through enough.
A few moments later, Clark plopped down next to her. The serious expression on his face was pretty spooking.
