CHAPTER 5: LIVING IN MISSISSIPPI
LIFE IN PANBEH CITY-In mid-September of 1982, at age thirty-two, Dr. Nick hit the road. He hoped by moving to a new location life would give him a new slate; he had beaten the odds before. His dreams had plummeted to the ground. He was fighting the negative thoughts at the back of his head fiercely.
The North and the Midwest were good to him. He was ready to try the South.
His natural remedy was to soak in as much scenery as he could. Nature was his savior. Along the way, he kept the images of ever-changing landscapes of America in his mind. Meanwhile, many welcome signs greeted him as he entered the various towns and states.
Finally, he made it to Rice County in Mississippi. He had a déjà vu feeling; Rice County resembled the coastal towns of the Caspian Sea. He felt an indescribable closeness with his surroundings. His spirit was lifted, his emptiness vanished, as if, heâd never suffered any pain or anguish. He knew that he had found his home.
The county was like a large, never-ending rice farm. Rice County definitely measured up to its name, the land of rice.
Other expansive farms grew cotton, soybeans, and a variety of grains, and the farmlands stretched for miles. The bright sunny sky and the fertile lands left an enduring mark on him.
He saw the sign welcoming visitors to Panbeh City. He expected to see a town similar to Chestertown, but it was far different. Panbeh City was a pleasant farming community, not a college town. It was quite warm and humid at that time of the year.
There was no river passing through it, but a river formed the eastern border of the city. According to the map, the majestic Mississippi river was rushing southward on the western side of Panbeh City, about sixty miles away. Overall, the city looked very green. The height and shape of the trees looked very different from those in Chestertown. Dr. Nick was amazed to see that Americans looked very different in different parts of the country. The majority of the population was of African-American decent. He soaked in all his new discoveries and revelations about America.
His brief stop at an eatery showed him a taste of Southern cuisine and hospitality. He detected their Southern accent, which was clearly distinct from Chestertown. It triggered his memory of his move to Tehran; he and his family were harassed by strangers because of their accent.
The warmth and genuine hospitality of the city brought a ray of hope to him; perhaps his days of misery were over. He had to stop several times to get direction to the company, and in every interaction, he felt the genuine Southern friendliness.
He finally arrived at the company. All his paperwork was completed. He was expected to officially start working in October. The company assisted him with getting situated in the local area.
Dr. Nick made his work his number one priority. His company was impressed with his dedication and contribution to the anti-cancer drug development.
