Chapter Nineteen

It took them a few hours, but between the four of them they managed to reel in a dozen fish. The results were a pleasant surprise to Elle, given the crude equipment they were forced to use. Level 1 fishers had to craft improvised rods using green branches and vines, then attach a carved hook to the end. They worked, but only for smaller fish. A larger creature could easily break their rod in half without a second thought.

But the results were good, enough to give her a substantial amount of experience in the fisher skill and bring her close to level 2. More importantly, it gave them all their first taste of fresh food in weeks.

“Now aren’t you glad we stayed behind?” she said to Ashryn.

“Yeah. I was never a huge fan of fish, but after we’ve been stuck eating the same dried and powdered stuff for weeks…”

“Everything tastes better when you haven’t had anything like it for a while,” Elle agreed.

Ashryn looked around. “I think it’s good for everyone too. Finally getting a decent meal seems to have improved the mood quite a bit. And we needed that.”

Elle had noticed the change as well. Everyone seemed to be happier now, though whether it would stay that way remained to be seen. But even if it was temporary, it was a welcome change from their arguments earlier in the day.

“Hopefully getting fresh food will be easier now that we’re out of the mountains,” Elle said. “That’s why we’re here, isn’t it? To make sure we can get enough land so we can grow crops and gather and hunt.”

“All this talk about being put into a game, and we turn into hunter-gatherers. And farmers,” Ashryn said. “Kind of a double-edged sword, when you’re restricted by your stomach.”

Elle exhaled. “Yeah, if you told me we were being put in the middle of an RPG, this isn’t what I would think it would be. But I guess it makes sense. There are no NPCs.”

“There are plenty of NPCs.”

“I meant the friendly kind. The ones that act as shopkeepers and guards, and the like. The ones that make sure all the towns are running, and the ones that help players. We just keep running into enemies.”

“And whatever you and Luke found in the mountains.”

Elle frowned. “I’m… I’m still not sure what to think about that.”

Ashryn shrugged. “Well, whatever. It’s something useful for us, at least.”

“Can I ask you something?” Elle said.

“Sure. What is it?”

“What do you think about the dispute? I mean, I know that you called out Nico, but what do you really think?”

A smile crossed Ashryn’s face for a brief moment. “What do I think? Well, I can’t disagree with him on some points. It is completely unfair that only a few of us are stuck shouldering the load. But what are we going to do about it?”

“So you’re not happy?”

“Nah, I don’t think it’s fair. But life’s not fair, so why should this be any different? What’s the point of complaining about it? And Nico’s attitude concerns me.
