They weren’t paying any attention to her as they got closer and the woman bumped into her, but just kept on walking. How rude Jane thought. She watched the dog walkers, golfers and lovers disappear into the darkness, she was alone in the car park. Maybe the caller had lost their nerve. She was just about to get back in her car when a dog came waddling up to her and started sniffing around her legs and rubbing up against her. It walked around her, stopped, looked up at her and let out a little growl. Not a nasty growl she thought, more a I want something growl.
“Sorry about that,” came a voice from behind her. She hadn’t seen the lady and the dog come up behind her.
“He just wants a fuss.”
“That’s Okay.”
Torrance lent down to stroke the dog, she was drawn to its long ears and couldn’t help herself, she started to roll them around in her hands.
“He’ll let you do that all day long.”
“He does seem to like it.”
“If you come quietly Miss Torrance you can sit with him in the car.”
Torrance stood up.
“Sorry, did you…”
“Yes Miss Torrance, you did hear correctly. You can either come with me quietly or by force. It is your choice.”
“I am a Police Officer so I think…”
She stopped mid sentence as she looked down to see a gun pointing at her stomach.
“Miss Torrance. It is precisely because of who you are that I need you.”
“What do you want from me.”
“It’s not so much you as it is your partner, Mr Hartford. He owes my Uncle some favours and you are my insurance that he delivers.”
“What sort of favours?”
“Plenty of time for explanations, let’s go.”
“Who are you?”
Torrance didn’t get an answer to her last question. She felt the gun push her in the stomach and then the lady dog owner beckoned her to walk towards the entrance. As they reached the entrance a black Range Rover pulled up and Torrance was forced into the back seat followed by the dog. Her kidnapper got in the passenger seat.
“See Miss Torrance, I have kept my promise. You can sit with Copper now until we reach our destination.”
The child locks on the doors clicked shut and the Range Rover sped off down the main road away from Fairlop Waters.
