10: The Night Things Start to Change

September 21

Despite his promise to his brother and Steve, it takes six weeks after orientation before Cameron sees Eleanor on campus.

It’s a Delta Lambda Phi Saturday night kegger - which, when he thinks about it, isn’t all that different from their Tuesday night keggers - and Cam swears that he’s only there to make sure that his roommate doesn’t do anything that may result in Cam needing a new one. He’s two seconds away from changing his mind and just leaving Austin there when he hears a giggle, and Cam doesn’t need to turn around to know to whom it belongs.

“There are two men who would literally have my balls if they knew you were here.”

He sits down on the arm of the chair she’s currently occupying, watching her blink once before looking up at him from the rims of glasses he didn’t know she needed. “I won’t tell if you won’t.”

She gives her head a little shake, and he can’t help but smile at her.

The room is in full-on party mode. The music is too loud, and the furniture pushed back to make room for dancing - if the grinding happening in the middle of the room constitutes dancing. Eleanor most likely just sat down a few moments ago, and Cam smiles at the fact that her cheeks are flushed. A couple is making out on the long couch adjacent to her, but either Eleanor doesn’t notice, or she’s just better at actively ignoring them than he is.

“How many of those have you had?” It’s the kind of question his brother and Steve would require him to ask, and Cam thinks he manages it without sounding too judgmental.

Eleanor just laughs at him. “I’ve had one vodka cran.” She informs him lightly, and Cam notes that her eyes are wide and her smile bright, and she doesn’t look the least bit drunk. “This is just cran.” When he tilts his head closer to her, she nods in the direction of the keg in the corner. “Sasha just broke up with her boyfriend. It’s my job to make sure she goes back to her room alone.”

“Your first college party, and you’re designatedly sober.” He pushes a low whistle between his teeth, and Eleanor rolls her eyes. “That has to suck for you.”

“Who says this is my first college party?”

The couple on the couch next to them has begun removing each other’s clothes, and Eleanor can’t help her snort now.

Maybe she’s not as good as he thought.

“You wanna get out of here?” There’s half a second before Cam realizes what he sounds like, and it’s why she smiles despite her cocked eyebrow. “Out to the balcony or something.” He clarifies quickly. “Where there’s less noise.”

She downs the rest of her solo cup, dropping it into another on the table before pulling herself to her feet. In the sea of miniskirts and strapless dresses, Cam’s actually kind of amazed that he didn’t notice her sooner in her dark wash jeans and oversized t-shirt falling off one shoulder.
