Luke and Mom have gone off to see a movie. Mom finally has a few seconds off of work, and I convinced her to spend it with her only son. She’ll have to spend all her time with him when I’m gone, anyway.

She has chronic back pain, resulting from a car accident in her teens. I’ve known this all my life. Today, I steal the pain pills out of her medicine cabinet. Once they’ve been gone for a few minutes and I know they aren’t coming back, I grab the medicine bottle from its hiding place and go into the bathroom, locking the door.

My phone sits on the counter next to me. My note is on the desk in my bedroom. The pill bottle sits on the counter in front of me, unmoving and menacing. Should I really do this? Yes. I should. The pain won’t stop any other way. I’d do anything to just make the pain stop.

Using tap water, I pour myself a glass of water and tighten my hand around it. Hesitantly, I open the pill bottle. I stare down at them, contemplating. I have to do this. I have to do this. There’s no other way. Without giving myself too much time to think about it, I pour a handful of pills into my palm and shove them in my mouth. One hard gulp of water and they’re down.

But I don’t stop. I keep going until the bottle is empty. It was only half full to begin with, but it should do the trick.

After a while, I begin to panic. I can’t feel anything yet. Surely, if it were going to work, I’d feel something by now. Right? I try to reach for the bathroom door knob, but my face suddenly feels very fuzzy. I look down at my outstretched hand, and the colors swirl together in front of my face. My knees begin to feel unstable just as my phone starts buzzing on the bathroom counter. I see Carlie’s picture on the screen and fall to the floor.
