Chapter Fourteen

“Shh. It’s going to be alright,” Dana consoled as she rubbed Taylor’s head, which was resting on her lap. They were on the sofa. It had been almost three hours and Zoey hadn’t come home yet.

“Thanks for coming over,” Taylor lamented.

“Of course.”

“You can gloat now. You were right.”

“Oh, come on. I’m not that shallow.”

“Help me, Dana.”

“I need something to go on to help you out. Just start from the beginning.”

“I was feeling things, you know. But then she told me she liked some girl and she wanted my advice,” Taylor said.

“A girl from school?” Dana asked.

“No. She said it was just a girl she saw every day.”

“You mean you?”

Taylor sat up and stared at Dana. “Me?”

“Aww, sweetie. So pretty and yet so naïve. She wanted to know how she could win you over.”

“Seriously?”

“Mmm. Seriously. So what ‘advice’ did you give her?”

“I told her to be herself.”

Dana nodded slowly. “And then she made you dinner.”

“No! The dinner was already planned.”

“Right. But maybe she thought she could turn it into a date?”

“No.”

“Tay, if you want my help, you’re going to have to be more open-minded. Okay?”

Taylor put her head back on Dana’s legs. “Okaaay.”

“Alright. Walk me through the dinner.”

“Well, first we had some wine—”

“You said she didn’t drink.”

Taylor grimaced. “Yeah. I kind of de-virginized her with that whole alcohol thing earlier in the week.”

“Nice, Taylor. Real nice. You don’t waste any time, do you?”

“She was having a bad day so I introduced her to my friend.”

“Your friend, Merlot?”

“Sort of.”

“If I didn’t really know you, I would think you were evil and corruptive right now.”

“Thanks a bunch.”

“Moving along. So you two are drinking wine on your non-date and you’re talking. About what?”

“Okay. She was telling me about her childhood and her classes and I told her about—” Taylor moved her arm up to shield her face.

“What? Taylor, what did you tell her about?”

“I told her about Holly.”

“Jesus Christ! You talked to HER about Holly but not ME? I’m your best friend!”

“Dana, it’s no offense to you. I felt…” Taylor sat back up, rubbing her temples with her hands. “Ugh.”

“You felt what?”

“I felt safe talking to her.”

“Ha ha!”

Taylor rolled her eyes. “You’re gloating.”

“So? I’m not perfect. I’m done. Continue, please. You were saying?”

“We were talking about all different things. Personal things and it was…nice.”

“Oh, Taylor.”

“What?”

“You totally had a date.”

“Alright. I’m not going to lie. For a moment it felt like a date so I went to kiss her, but she—”

“You did what?”

“Dana! Let me finish. She stopped me. Therefore I don’t think she has feelings for me.”

“When she stopped you, did she say anything?”

“She asked me if I had plans tonight with someone else.”

“And did you tell her the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then what the hell did you expect her to do? Make out with you knowing you were going to have sex with someone else like ten minutes later? Taylor? Did you take into account the fact that maybe she’s afraid of getting hurt? Not everything is about you, dude.” Dana was shaking her head.
