As soon as the exam period is over, the weight disappears from Jadeâs shoulders and sheâs back, almost instantly, to her warm, calm self. She meets me in the main square after her last exam with two coffees, a wide smile and an apology.
âFor what?â I ask.
âBeing a stressy bitch,â she says. âExam-mode-me is not fun. Vibs tells me that all the time.â
âI liked it,â I say, taking a sip of coffee, smiling. âGood to see the flappy bit of the swan.â
She grimaces, pressing her knuckles to her forehead. âOh my God. Iâm sorry. I said the thing about being a swan, didnât I? How mortifying.â
âItâs good,â I say, enjoying this way too much. âIt wasnât healthy of me to think you were perfect. This is better.â
She laughs, sliding her arm through mine. âHow was your exam?â
âFine,â I say. âGlad itâs over. Can we do something fun?â
âYes!â she says, sweet with enthusiasm. âIâve been thinking about exactly that. Iâve been making a plan.â
âA plan?â
âA plan! A project, in fact. Project Make-Rosie-Love-Norwich,â she says.
I splutter out a laugh. âOh my God. You came up with that this afternoon?â
âYes! Not just for today, obviously. This is a semester project.â
âI do like Norwich,â I say, laughing. âNorwich isnât the problem.â
âLove Norwich,â she corrects. âIâm going to make us a map. All the places Jade and Rosie are going to kiss before May.â
âI like that idea,â I say, then correct myself. âLove. I love that idea.â
She grins. âI thought you would. Ask me what the first stop is.â
âWhatâs the first stop?â I ask obediently, lifting my cup for another sip of coffee.
âMy bed,â she says, straight-faced, not even attempting to lower her voice.
I choke on the coffee, feeling my face blaze an immediate red, and her grin widens, like sheâs enjoying herself.
âNo?â she asks, very innocently.
âI thought you meant new places in Norwich,â I say, trying to regain my composure. âI know your bed pretty well.â
âNot well enough,â she says, her eyes on mine, and my stomach flips right over. Thereâs a twist to the way sheâs smiling, the kind of twist thatâs doing things to every nerve ending in my body. âSpeaking of places we havenât been . . .â
Oh my God. Oh my God. Itâs not just my face on fire any more, because I know what she means. I know exactly what she means. I feel like I might just about burst into flame. She holds my gaze for a moment more, then laughs a warm, teasing laugh, full of promise and also, in her Jade way, reassurance. She gives my arm a squeeze.
âSo, this first stop,â I say. Iâm aiming for casual, but it comes out a bit strangled. âWhen were you thinking?â
âWhenever youâre ready,â Jade says. âBut there are a lot of places on my list, so we should get started soon, donât you think?â
