As soon as the exam period is over, the weight disappears from Jade’s shoulders and she’s back, almost instantly, to her warm, calm self. She meets me in the main square after her last exam with two coffees, a wide smile and an apology.

‘For what?’ I ask.

‘Being a stressy bitch,’ she says. ‘Exam-mode-me is not fun. Vibs tells me that all the time.’

‘I liked it,’ I say, taking a sip of coffee, smiling. ‘Good to see the flappy bit of the swan.’

She grimaces, pressing her knuckles to her forehead. ‘Oh my God. I’m sorry. I said the thing about being a swan, didn’t I? How mortifying.’

‘It’s good,’ I say, enjoying this way too much. ‘It wasn’t healthy of me to think you were perfect. This is better.’

She laughs, sliding her arm through mine. ‘How was your exam?’

‘Fine,’ I say. ‘Glad it’s over. Can we do something fun?’

‘Yes!’ she says, sweet with enthusiasm. ‘I’ve been thinking about exactly that. I’ve been making a plan.’

‘A plan?’

‘A plan! A project, in fact. Project Make-Rosie-Love-Norwich,’ she says.

I splutter out a laugh. ‘Oh my God. You came up with that this afternoon?’

‘Yes! Not just for today, obviously. This is a semester project.’

‘I do like Norwich,’ I say, laughing. ‘Norwich isn’t the problem.’

‘Love Norwich,’ she corrects. ‘I’m going to make us a map. All the places Jade and Rosie are going to kiss before May.’

‘I like that idea,’ I say, then correct myself. ‘Love. I love that idea.’

She grins. ‘I thought you would. Ask me what the first stop is.’

‘What’s the first stop?’ I ask obediently, lifting my cup for another sip of coffee.

‘My bed,’ she says, straight-faced, not even attempting to lower her voice.

I choke on the coffee, feeling my face blaze an immediate red, and her grin widens, like she’s enjoying herself.

‘No?’ she asks, very innocently.

‘I thought you meant new places in Norwich,’ I say, trying to regain my composure. ‘I know your bed pretty well.’

‘Not well enough,’ she says, her eyes on mine, and my stomach flips right over. There’s a twist to the way she’s smiling, the kind of twist that’s doing things to every nerve ending in my body. ‘Speaking of places we haven’t been . . .’

Oh my God. Oh my God. It’s not just my face on fire any more, because I know what she means. I know exactly what she means. I feel like I might just about burst into flame. She holds my gaze for a moment more, then laughs a warm, teasing laugh, full of promise and also, in her Jade way, reassurance. She gives my arm a squeeze.

‘So, this first stop,’ I say. I’m aiming for casual, but it comes out a bit strangled. ‘When were you thinking?’

‘Whenever you’re ready,’ Jade says. ‘But there are a lot of places on my list, so we should get started soon, don’t you think?’
