CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

James returns to his office, becoming more agitated and more determined with each passing moment.

Walking by Erica’s office on the way to his own, he leans his head inside.

“You’re going to want to hear what just happened in LA.”

Intrigued and concerned, Erica locks her computer and follows close on his heels. Once in his office, James hangs up his suit jacket while Erica shuts the door, gets a Diet Coke from the mini-fridge and opens it before handing it to James, then sits in the chair across from his desk. James sits and takes a deep breath. Meticulously, he recounts the events of the morning, leading to Speer’s entry into the CIA field office.

“No way!” Erica says. “I can hardly wrap my head around it. You really think Speer is actively working for the CIA, and he arranged for the prison note? I’m certainly not shocked that there was something else going on with him, but I would not have guessed this.”

“The breadcrumbs line up so well, a blind man could follow them.”

“I think you are supposed to say, visually impaired,” Erica cracks, taking a slight edge of the intense discussion. “Where do we go from here?”

“I’m not sure, but I have some ideas,” James says.

“If you tell me you are going to go confront Speer, I will go get Brian right now.”

“No. At least, not yet. Right now, I’m thinking that the more we learn about the CIA’s possible involvement with the cartel, the more opportunities we will have to learn things from Speer. I think we can find ways to use our friend Tim to our advantage.”

James’s chain of thought is disrupted by the ping notification of an incoming text.

He shows Erica the phone. “It’s from Javi, and the timing is almost spooky. Dr. Mirada’s message said: “I had a call today with Doctor Anna Garcia-Dias from the University of Guadalajara, to discuss recent cartel developments in Mexico, which has seen a resurgence of cartel-related violence and open wars between rival cartels. While on the call, I thought about our recent discussion, so I asked her who she thought was responsible for Camarena’s murder. Her response surprised me and should interest you. She said, ‘Everyone knows it was the CIA who killed him.’”

James knows full well that others have asserted that the CIA was, at a minimum, involved in, and at most, responsible for, Agent Camarena’s abduction and interrogation. The theory, as advanced by Hector Berrellez in The Last Narc, is that Camarena learned of a connection between the cartel and the CIA’s Central American activities, including its covert, and largely illegal, activities to support the Contras in their fight to overthrow the government of Nicaragua. Because he got too close to such sensitive information, the argument goes, he was picked up and interrogated.

s

James and Erica already had spent considerable time combing through the publicly available records to see what corroboration, if any, they could find to these theories. Dr. Mirada’s text increased the urgency of their
