CHAPTER 8:
Nell stood before the glass in her bedroom. The shirtwaist, made of the green fabric, and coupled with the blue skirt, made for a lovely combination. Mrs. Garret had been right. The green suited her complexion and coloring perfectly.
She had a good corset still, and she had long since learned to lace herself into it. The shirtwaist and corset made her naturally small waist look tiny and her chest look larger and fuller. The skirt, shaped a bit like an upside down tulip, swayed around her legs and hips in a pretty little way that made her smile.
The hat settled onto her head. The blue ribbons nearly matched the skirt and a soft little sigh of happiness came from her mouth as the delicate and new undergarments rested lightly against her skin.
Would Holly approve of the outfit?
The question resounded through Nell’s mind. Her breath caught. It should not matter to her if Holly thought the outfit, and her, pretty, but it did.
And Nell had no idea why either.
But she did know that her wanting Holly to find her pretty scared the daylights right out of her.
She stepped into the hall then down it. Holly stood at the stove, dressed in a very nice shirtwaist in a pretty cream color and with a small bit of lace around the collar. Nell knew that Holly had washed that shirtwaist well the afternoon before and hung it on the line to help rid it of the slightly dingy look it had gotten in the city and now it was crisply ironed and fresh.
The skirt she wore, long and brown, had just a wide cream border at its hem and Holly had washed her hair the evening before as she had bathed in the tub that they had taken turns in. Nell had washed hers as well and afterward they had rinsed their hair good with a dose of apple cider vinegar then sat in the parlor talking and brushing their hair.
That had set all sorts of trembling off in Nell’s body, trembling that had also frightened her. Nell’s hair was up in a shimmering coil on the back of her head, with just a few loose tendrils left to wave around her face. The look suited her.
Holly turned and her mouth dropped open. Her eyes widened. She breathed out, “Nell! You look so beautiful!”
Nell’s belly dropped. A strange and unsettling wetness began between her thighs and she panicked for a moment, wondering if it were her monthly flow. No, it could not be. She had just had the flow two weeks before.
Her mouth went dry. “Thank you. So do you. I like that skirt.”
“I added the band trim last night.” Holly shot the hem a look. “I hope I didn’t miss any stitches and the thing holds.”
Emotions, too many to sort through, swung through Nell. She looked at the heavy and wide basket sitting on the table. Last night she and Holly had gone down into the dank and dim cellar and fetched up dozens of jars of food that Nell had canned last fall.
