EPILOG

That next morning I came into the king's chambers from the shower room dressed only in a thin robe, surprised to find a lineup of well-dressed men and women fixated on their masked king as he paced in front of them, giving orders for coats, slacks, shirts, shoes.

Shin saw me and met my eyes.

"What is this?" I asked.

"If you're coming with me, you will need clothes. I won't parade you around naked on my ship. That's an order."

My heart soared, but for show with his people—the tailors, the guards, all his entourage—I kept my face neutral. "I appreciate that," I replied.

Shin turned back to his people. "I shall prefer him in darkest reds. That will be all."

He dismissed them with a wave of his hand, then leaned in to take my face in his hands and kissed me.
