CHAPTER 16

Solomon

BOTH REFRESHED FROM a long hot soak in the bath and dressed in clean clothes, neither Ben nor Creed bore even scant resemblance to the scruffy, dirt-grimed pair that had entered the house two hours before. Ben had taken a couple of painkillers when his chest started to throb again. Creed was busy in the kitchen preparing a meal. The aroma of food drifted into the lounge and made Ben's mouth water. He'd offered to help, but Creed would have none of it, telling him to sit down and rest. He had just come off the phone to the local Gendarme, to report the hire car stolen just in case it was ever found. The French police couldn't have been less interested if they'd tried, and told him to come into the station during the next few days with the details. Tomorrow, when the office opened, he would contact the hire company.

Creed poked his head into the room. “Can you grab a bottle of wine from the cellar? It's through the door under the stairs.”

Ben stood. “Red or white?”

“Something to go with the steak, a red I think, but you choose. I'm easy with either.”

“Okay, but be warned, I know nothing about wine, so on your head be it,” Ben replied.

Creed laughed.

Ben opened the cellar door and turned on the light. The wooden steps creaked when he climbed down. He glanced around at the bottles of wine stacked neatly in the racks stretching from one end of the room to the other. There must be some sort of system here, he thought, but he had no idea what it could be.

Would they be stacked by type, age, or just as they were purchased?

He moved along the racks pulling out bottles at random and reading their labels. He ignored the really dusty ones in case they were old and valuable. He also skipped past the white wines, willing to go along with Creed's suggestion of red. When he discovered a rack of bottles that were practically dust free, he assumed they were probably recent additions by Creed. He browsed through them and smiled at one of the labels. He stared at the black and white image of the priest, Saunière. According to the label, the wine was made from local grapes and sold in Rennes-Le-Château; it was a fitting wine for the occasion. Ben had made his choice. He was about to leave when something crashed onto the floor above and startled him. He first thought was Creed had dropped something; he hoped it wasn’t the steaks.

“Who the hell are you?” Creed shouted.

Ben had the distinct impression the shouting was for his benefit; a warning. He stared at the underneath of the floorboards when someone ran across them. He followed the sound with his eyes. The old boards bent slightly when weight was placed on them, freeing specks of dust that drifted in the air. The footsteps were pursued by another pair. Ben had no idea which set belonged to Creed, the ones doing the chasing or the ones being chased.
