CHAPTER 24

Hillis hadn’t heard anything from Rudy Harsh. The trucker should have made it to the dumping point by now, off-loaded the cargo, and collected the payment. Hills had given Harsh strict instructions to check in with him the minute the load changed hands. He knew Harsh wasn’t the sharpest crayon in the box, but up to now he’d always managed to make clean hauls and check in when he was suppose to. Hillis fidgeted with his cell phone. The GPS tracker he’d planted on the back of the trailer showed the load parked on a side street just south of Chicago’s warehouse district. “At least the simpleton drove to the right city,” Hillis mumbled. He punched in the numbers and waited for Rudy Harsh to answer the call. On the twentieth ring he finally picked up.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, my ass,” shouted Hillis. “Where the hell are you?”

“I’m where you sent me, Mr. Hillis.”

“Idiot! What did I say about names? Never use my name!”

There was heavy breathing on Harsh’s end of the phone.

“Was my cargo delivered?”

“Yes sir.”

“On time?”

“You bet. The client has already put them to work. Most of ‘em are processing chickens—plucking feathers, gutting the nasty buggers, butchering their slimy carcasses, stuffing ‘em in plastic bags—all the shit folks like you wouldn’t be caught dead doing.”

Hillis let the comment pass by. He could deal with Harsh later, in a more private and personal setting. “And is the client satisfied with the product?”

“Seems to be, yeah.”

“Satisfied enough to wrap the deal up and fork over my money so you can haul your ass back here for another shipment.”

“He’s counting out the cash as we speak.”

“Good,” said Hillis, “then everything is kosher. That means your ass will be back behind the wheel grinding gears in a few minutes.”

There was silence on the phone, the kind that told Hillis everything was not kosher.

“I sense a fuck up. Please tell me that’s my imagination, everything’s cool and you’ll be herding that piece-of-shit rig of yours down the highway by the time I disconnect.”

“Ah, there is one small glitch,” said Harsh.

“Glitch?” shouted Hillis. “A fucking glitch? Tell me I didn’t just hear you say glitch!”

“It’s no biggie,” said Harsh. “It’s just, well, we—.”

“You wanna stop tap dancing and tell me what the hell’s going on?”

Harsh’s voice turned to a whisper. “It’s gonna be a little short, the money I mean.”

Hillis felt his face bursting into flames. “I did not just here you say that. I know I didn’t because you assured me everything was just fine. Didn’t you just assure me everything was fine?”

Harsh ignored the question. Being six hundred miles away gave him a little latitude with his response. “Remember the girl, the one that had the flu? We’ll it got worse.”

“Not my problem and definitely not a reason for the payment to be short. You want to try again?”

“Sir, the girl died. It was some kind of weird super bug. I had no way of knowing that. When I got to the drop-off we found her curled up in a ball and blue as a sapphire.
