Step One: find an apartment. After a full week of pounding the pavement with no luck and no more time, we decided to sacrifice our food money to buy an “exclusive apartment listing” from a sketchy ad we’d seen in the New York Times. Forty phone calls and twenty listings later, we found an apartment in a prime area of the Upper West Side. After negotiating our rent with the shady building manager (who made Lord Voldemort look like Tinker Bell), we had our very own two-hundred-square-foot apartment with no kitchen, and it only cost us four thousand dollars up front.

Sounds as scary as Final Destination, right? Well, it was. It was also a thrilling journey full of growth and self-discovery—very similar to a Lifetime movie.

Moving to a new city can be overwhelming for anyone, but the odds in favor of a smooth transition increase if you do some planning. Before you pack your bags and jump on an airplane, decide which field of dance appeals to you. While you can pursue almost any medium of dance anywhere nowadays, New York makes more sense for a dancer who wants to do musical theater and perform on Broadway. Los Angeles seems more appropriate for a dancer who wants to work on film and television, while innovators of concert dance should flock to Chicago or New York. Naturally, you can change your mind about your career path as many times as popular kids in middle school change BFFs. Still, it’s always nice to have a general plan of attack.
