Chapter 6

I stare transfixed at my husband’s image on the live camera feed. His hair is mussed from wearing a ski mask, and his complexion is a deep, ruddy hue undoubtedly from a combination of exertion and the cold temperatures. But still, he’s the most beautiful sight I can imagine.

He’s here.

I’m suddenly overwhelmed with emotions, everything from relief to joy to the simple desire to feel his arms around me, his lips on mine. Warmth floods my chest, easing the crushing pressure, and I can finally take an easy breath.

Shane says something to Sam, and Sam gestures up the stairs, smiling.

He’s looking for me.

Three men file in behind Shane, removing their ski masks and outer gear. The first man has a silver buzz cut and a trim salt-and-pepper beard.

“It’s Cooper!” I tell Erin, glancing back at her with a smile.

Sam marches right up to him, and the two men stand face-to-face, lost in each other’s gaze. They clasp each other tightly, and Sam laughs as Cooper grips the back of his neck and kisses him soundly on the lips.

Our guys are here! They must have walked for hours in the blustery, waist-deep drifts of snow and bone-chilling cold temperatures.

I’m not one bit surprised, though. This is Shane and Cooper we’re talking about. They wouldn’t let anything as mundane as a once-in-a-century blizzard stand in their way.

Two more men remove their ski masks and hoods. “Liam!” Shane’s youngest brother. “And Miguel!” My first bodyguard. These people aren’t just friends; they’re family.

I sink back into my chair, overwhelmed with dizzying relief. Shane’s here, and he brought a small army with him. Everything’s going to be just fine.

At the sight of so many familiar and beloved faces, my throat tightens, thick with tears. I stand, taking Luke in my arms, and kiss his cheek. “Your daddy’s here,” I whisper, my voice shaking. We’re okay.

We leave the panic room and head for the stairs. The moment I reach the top step, Shane looks up and his gaze locks on me with laser precision.

My heart hammers in my chest at the sight of him, and my legs shake so badly, I don’t trust myself to walk down the stairs carrying Luke.

But it’s okay, because Shane is already racing up the stairs, coming right for us. The instant I feel his arms come around me, I burst into tears, and my sobbing upsets Luke, who starts crying too. We’re both emotional train wrecks. Shane laughs softly as he steers us safely back from the steps. Then, careful not to crush his son, he sweeps us both into his arms, enveloping us in a protective embrace, his chilled hands running up and down my back. The fact that his arms are shaking tells me everything I need to know. He was afraid for us.

One of his hands goes to the back of my head, cradling it as he crushes his mouth to mine. Our lips collide, and we’re both breathing hard. I gasp, overcome with a mixture of relief and longing so intense it’s a physical pain.
