After a hot shower, and Vincent giving me some soup and a sandwich, I was able to sleep. Passed out would be more apt. I hated not being alert, but I knew I had to gain my strength. Eventually, Atticus wouldn’t need me anymore and I hadn’t figured out how to get out of here on my own.
The sound of shouting forced me awake. As quietly as I could, I opened the bedroom door. I should’ve been shocked it was unlocked, but the hallways seemed to be guarded. It was Vincent and Atticus’ voices across the hall in what I knew to be where Simon had stayed. Did they find him? Was he back? No!
“You’re barely hanging on, Atticus. Where’s the man full of spirit, belief, and drive? You came to me after your father’s death, after you found out all the secrets he had kept from you, and begged me to help you make it right. You told me that in your father’s weakened state, he had given everything to the Manos family and you wanted it back. I agreed, it’s why I promised to help you get there.” Vincent sounded frustrated.
“And I’m getting there. But don’t you see, Vincent, I’m getting even more than I thought I would.”
“Pfft. You’re getting cocky. You wanted all that Christopher had. You wanted what you said was owed. Now you’re trying to take on the Hart dynasty? That’s not yours to have.”
“You speak out of turn, old man!”
“Don’t you disrespect me, Atticus. You came to me because you couldn’t do this all yourself. Don’t forget that without me, you wouldn’t be here and Christopher wouldn’t be in that room.”
There was a silence and I thought they were done. I went to shut the door when Atticus spoke again.
“There’s nothing wrong with having more. If my father hadn’t trusted that witch of a woman, I very well might have been on par with the Harts.”
He had to be speaking of my mother, and that whole situation was bothering me. The hate he had for my entire family was madness. I knew my father was a ruthless man, unapologetically. But my mother was a saint. Not book smart, but her heart was kind. She loved my sister and me, and I’d never seen cruelty done by her hands.
“You can’t know that, Atticus. Your father loved Maria Manos. He would have sold his limbs for a simple smile. I believe she loved him too, at one point. But she—”
“No!” Atticus’ tone was venomous. “She never cared about him, just what he had. And as soon as she had all she needed from him, she took it all to that man and they fled. Everything he had, Vincent. I watched him disappear before my very eyes.” His anger turned to great sadness and I knew in the morning, I was going to confront Atticus about this. I had to know what my mother did that drove a man to capture me, swear to dismantle everything I built, and foolishly get into bed with the Hart family.
