CHAPTER FIVE

The only thing Linc ever regretted about his hands when it came to the drums was that his wrists were missing a few important bones which made it impossible for him to spin his hands fast enough to twirl the drumstick around his finger. He could do a couple of loops if he flicked it with his thumb hard enough, but he’d never be like those showy assholes on stage.

Of course, he was the only one who noticed or gave a single, solitary fuck. He was surrounded by his bandmates who meshed with him like platonic musical soulmates, and a crowd—half of which wanted to fuck him just because he was a drummer.

Life could be worse.

He glanced up at Chris—their lead—who was fucking around with the amp, then over at Rogelio who was tapping his foot on the ground with his bass pressed against his chest as he waited. The crowd was growing restless, but the equipment was on the fucking fritz. He didn’t mind so much. It always worked them into a frenzy so when shit got going, the crowd went wild.

And normally, when things weren’t going quite right, Linc would be scanning the crowd for someone to get off with after the show, but tonight felt different.

It felt wrong.

He caught the eyes of a gorgeous, blond stranger at the bar, and suddenly he got a rush of guilt like he was fuckin’ cheating.

Shaking his head, he looked over to his right and saw the guys from the shop. Zeke was right up front being forced to pound back another shot. He was going to be completely shit-faced before their set was done, but such was the way of their pre-goodbye, goodbye party.

Everyone was a little heartbroken when Zeke announced he wasn’t taking up Tony on his offer to stay, but his heart belonged on an island, and they all kind of got it. Zeke came from money, and his money had bought himself premises and his freaky prodigy skill with ink bought him the respect of a few tattoo elders who wanted a change.

They’d provide the experience and reputation, and Zeke would provide a soft place to land, right on the beach.

Linc was going to miss the fuck out of him—so much it felt like he was losing a chunk of his heart—but he was also happy for his friend. Zeke didn’t talk a lot about his background, but Linc could tell the fucker was running from something.

Or hell, maybe he was running toward it.

Whatever the case, he just wanted the man to be happy. And at least he had a nice beach vacation spot when he wanted to get away from the mountains.

“Alright, you motherfuckaaaaas!” Chris’ voice cut into his thoughts as he glanced back over his shoulder and nodded to Linc. “I hope you’re all ready to lose your motherfucking minds!”

Chris went into the opening riff of their Mrs. Robinson cover and Linc’s hand clenched around his drumsticks as he prepared to lose everything he’d been holding too close to his chest for the past week.
