KAY

“Where are we?” Ezra asked as I drove down a two-lane highway.

We were fifteen minutes from the lake we were at earlier. Ezra asked was there more to the town than meets the eye. My first thought was to take him to a park where many people visited throughout the day. There were usually food trucks, vendors, and live music. However, a part of me wasn’t ready to be around a bunch of people just yet.

Instead, I wanted to take Ezra somewhere else. I checked the time and realized I had made perfect timing. We pulled up to the whiskey distillery. I could see Ezra out of the corner of my eye trying to figure out where I had brought him.

“Where we at?” he asked as he continued to look out the window.

“We are at the town’s whiskey distillery. It’s a very popular spot during the fall and winter. The guy who sang karaoke last night, James, his family owns it.”

“Damn, these people around here love them some whiskey.”

I giggled. “Yep, they even have a whiskey festival.”

“Figures.”

I slapped his arm. “Not too much on Little Holly Hill.”

He held his hand up in surrender. “Nah, I’m not saying the town is bad, from what I’ve seen it’s nice. The people I have encountered are nice as well. However, they love some whiskey.”

“That they do.”

I opened my door and we both got out. The distillery was empty. There was only one car in the parking lot besides mine. I knew it was James because of the guitar symbol on the back. We walked to the front of the building and as soon as I opened the door the smell of whiskey invaded my nose. James sat behind the counter with his guitar in his hand strumming a few notes. We were currently inside the distillery gift shop. The gift shop is where the customers would enter, take a look around before they tour the distillery, then end back at the gift shop.

The gift shop had many different bottles of whiskey, t-shirts, key chains, magnets, food infused with whiskey, and more. During tour season, the store made a killing. It was hard to keep the shelves stocked, however, James and his family found a way to meet all the consumers’ needs.

James looked up once he saw us walk in. He greeted us both with a smile.

“Kitty Kay! How you doing?” he asked placing his guitar down.

I smiled. He was the only one who called me Kitty Kay. “I’m doing good, James. This is my friend Ezra. You mind if I do my thing?”

James smiled big. “Do your thing, Kitty.”

I grabbed Ezra by his hand and pulled him to the back of the gift shop. We walked a few feet until we made it to the distillery room. I smiled big. I was still impressed by this area. This wasn’t my first or tenth time in the room. I knew this room like the back of my hand. The boilers, the mash tuns and pipes were covered in gold.
