Chapter 10

Sophia shivered under the bed, not so much from the cold, but from the fear that had driven her into rat feces infested dirt. Two menacing, red eyes stared at her. She didn’t blame the little guy. The mice and rats had lived here first, using this cabin as a refuge from animals that wanted a quick lunch.

She heard a sharp noise against the window. Blood roared in her ears, diluting the voices outside. A beam of light scanned the room, pausing near the bed.

“Hey, come take a look at this,” the man at the window yelled.

They were trapped. Even if the men belonging to those voices went through the cabin’s front door, she and Jake would have to stop and get dressed. They had no easy escape.

She shivered and reached out her hand for Jake. He didn’t move. No tremors of fear, no hard breathing rocked his body. How could he be unfazed by the intruders? Jake turned his head and she stared into his face. His eyes were bright with understanding and confidence.

He whispered, “We’re okay.”

Sophia wished she felt the same. Her body threatened to spasm with fear while waiting for the men to come and get them.

“What is that?” the man outside asked.

His partner replied, “It’s a rat, stupid. The place is crawling with them. Come on, let’s go back into town and have a beer. Ain’t no one out here.”

Sophia stayed still, praying the two men wouldn’t come back and search for them. Time stretched out as they waited silently. The boards on the floor grew uncomfortable, her body ached, but she didn’t dare leave her hiding place until Jake gave the okay.

He pulled her arm, urging her to follow. Neither said anything. They grabbed their damp clothes, took another quick shower and dressed. Sophia went to the kitchen and opened another can of chili.

“Cold chili for breakfast, a man could get use to this.”

She made a face and stuck out her tongue, trying to be funny. “I know it’s not great, but it was either this or black olives.”

Jake laughed. “Chili’s fine.”

Sophia sobered quickly. “How much time do you think we have before someone else comes out here looking for us?”

“A day, a week, an hour, I don’t know. We need to go into town and find out what’s happening.”

“Go into town. Why?” Sophia squeaked.

“Something’s going on. Those men wouldn’t have been out here unless Andre told them to come. We have to find out how deep this goes.”

“What if he’s there and he finds us? We don’t have anything to fight with and almost no money.”

“Yeah, but we have enough to get a decent meal before we hike over to Bloomington.”

“Bloomington?”

Jake threw his half empty can of chili into the sink. “Let’s go. By the time we get to town, the sun‘ll be up and the diner will be open.”

The wet ground sucked at Sophia’s shoes and mud clung to the soles. Her feet grew heavy and the ache in her legs increased. The month in the hospital had been hard on her body.
