Clearwater and one of his patrolmen, the squat stocky one who’d given Nighthawk the hard eyes on scene the other morning, pulled up, meeting them at the entrance. The timing had been impeccable as Savage, in his Suburban containing Sinclair and Hatch, arrived at almost the same time.

Savage stepped from the vehicle and gathered everybody into a cluster.

Deputy Nighthawk joined them.

"Listen, we have a real threat inside there.” Savage paused, looking at each member of the ensemble cast present before continuing. “Denny Paulson's a dangerous man. The warrant in hand speaks to that. Keep in mind Paulson’s a hunter. Wesson’s been gone for hours. There's a high likelihood that Paulson’s inside, which means he’s had ample time to make himself well-prepared for our arrival.”

“You mentioned Durango’s tactical unit will be here to assist. Any idea how long until they arrive?” Clearwater asked.

“They’re about thirty minutes out. It’s only going to be a small contingent, and they’re on orders from their chief to assist only if needed. We’re going to take the initial approach. They’ll stage themselves here, by our vehicles, when they arrive.”

Clearwater seemed satisfied by Savage’s explanation.

“Based on the information given in Wesson's interview, much of the property is booby-trapped. He didn’t offer much in the way of detailing the extent of it, but we have to assume the threat is real.”

“Those CFA nutjobs scare the hell out of me. Unpredictable lunatics,” Clearwater hissed.

“True. That said, be prepared to encounter potential IED's. Guys like Wesson and Paulson have been preparing for something like this for a long time. Everybody must be vigilant, eyes sharp, moving slowly. Complacency is a killer.”

No truer statement, Hatch thought.

“For those who haven’t been formally introduced, this is Rachel Hatch. She’s assisted our agency in the past on a case. I found her experience and expertise to be extremely beneficial.”

“She’s amazing,” Sinclair offered.

“Hatch here is operating as a consultant with us for the time being. Meaning she's non-tactical and will be assisting in a non-hands-on capacity. Her role, and the reason I brought her here today, is to help us in identifying any countermeasures Paulson may have at his disposal. Hatch has extensive experience in this regard.”

She felt the group’s eyes upon her and offered a nod of acknowledgement.

“If anybody has an objection, now is the time to speak up,” Savage said. Savage went face to face, scanning the crowd. As he locked eyes with each person in the semi-circle surrounding the front hood of his Suburban, each gave a nod of approval, the last of which came from Nighthawk.

"All right. Good. It's settled then. John, I'm going to have you lead the way with Hatch. You're going to be her shadow. She is going to be your eyes as we make the approach. The rest of us will move a few feet behind.” Savage let out a sigh. “I hope we don’t encounter any resistance. But hope is just a wish made by the unprepared.”
