Tommie unlocked the front door and Hank began to howl and yip. With any luck, she was the only reason he had to bark all day. Dropping her keys in a bowl on the counter, she snagged the lead to take him for a walk.

She opened the door slowly, hoping to prevent a habit of surging out. Hank spun in a circle, jumped on her legs, and peed a little. She quickly surveyed the small room. He had pulled down the bathmat and made a sort of bird’s nest out of the shredded pieces.

“My fault. I should have picked it up.” Tommie clicked the leash and led him out. She took a piece of bologna from the fridge and they left the building.

They walked to the far end of the parking lot and Tommie stood patiently while Hank added a little spritz of urine to every scent that he took a dislike to, sniffing his way across as far as the leash would allow. Finally, he jumped onto Tommie.

She held out a hand and said, “Down.” Rewarded with a bit of meat, he repeated the jump-down game until Tommie realized he thought the two acts went together.

She switched to heel and sit. Hank was a smart dog. By the time they had circled the lot twice, he basically followed the commands. Maybe pressing too far, she tried down using the German word platz to keep him from being confused by other directions from strangers. He did not understand what she wanted and whined as she tried to urge him lower. That would be better taught at home with more bologna to lead him along.

Back inside her condo, she unhooked him and then started her leftovers from dinner in the microwave. Finding a ball, she engaged Hank in a game of fetch until he lay panting. The ping of the timer indicated her meal was ready and she sat at the dinette table. He shifted to lie under her feet. Maybe it was sort of nice to have some company. Sheila was a trickster all right. Tommie wouldn’t return Hank unless the former owners had a huge reason why he was left tied to a post. Maybe he escaped and some good Samaritan hooked him up? That seemed unlikely; a good Samaritan would have taken him home, or to the pound at least. Nope, Hank was an Andrews now.
