Frank's hand was less than a half an inch from the dusty, dried bones in the trunk when a sudden shrill sound pierced the quiet of the basement. He jumped slightly and then cursed the cellar air. Frowning, he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and rejected the call. It had been ringing non-stop for a few hours now. He ignored this call as he had the rest, placing the phone beside him on the step. That done, he returned his attention to reaching into the crate.
The skeleton was still wearing clothes and Frank was determined to perform the gruesome task of searching it. He reached into the hip pockets of the dead body and felt something break under the sudden pressure. He forced himself to calm down and be more careful. A few minutes later he sighed and sat back. The pockets were all empty.
Frank looked around the basement wondering what he should do next and noticed through one of the high, small windows that it was now dark outside. He'd been in the house for quite some time. But where the hell was Talbot?
Deciding that it was better not to think about that, Frank reached up to close the crate's lid but stopped himself. Just showing from under the musty shirt the skeleton wore was a small rusted chain. He followed the chain's path up out of the shirt and around the collar bone.
A necklace, Frank thought, already reaching for it. He pulled gently on the chain and a smile broke on his face as the chain's pendant slipped out from under the cloth. The chain held a set of army dog tags. He tried to gently pull them over the bare skull. The chain caught on something and suddenly the entire skull broke away from the spine and rolled into the bottom of the crate. An ironic gasp slipped from his throat as he lifted the tags free and held them under the light.
They were rusty but still legible: JEROME EDWARD TALBOT.
"You son of a bitch," Frank said out loud. Raymond had killed his own father. It was the first inkling Frank had that the Killer hadn't started with the girls. Just then Frank's phone went off again. Frank picked it up off the stair and after a second's thought, tossed it into the crate and closed the lid. "You get it," he said, slipping the tags into his pocket and limping back upstairs.
Frank crossed paths with the black cat again back in the kitchen. He ignored the scratches on his face, the pain in his ankle and the incredible desire the red ribbon and bell gave him to hurtle the feline through a window. Instead, Frank found himself looking through the refrigerator for some milk. He found some, located a bowl and fed the animal, who had suddenly turned incredibly friendly, while he sat in a chair by the refrigerator and mused about what he should do next.
As the cat drank, Frank ran a hand down its length.
