The next morning, Shane pulled up in his driveway, parking in the shade by the house. He couldn’t bring himself to move from his Jeep yet. The last 24 hours had been longer, his night and morning busier than he’d bargained for.

A caravan of charter buses had pulled through the store parking lot about an hour before closing. Thankfully, they’d come after his sending Johnny that picture of his ass. God, he was embarrassed to say, he’d only sexted one other time and that was Travis’s first year at college, before he’d found a new boyfriend.

Red-faced and a little breathless, he’d hidden his phone as teenagers and parents had ransacked everything from touristy t-shirts to the grocery aisles. There’d been an unholy mess and an extra hour of restock he hadn’t counted on. He’d gotten home in time to eat the bowl of food Johnny had left him in the microwave, shower, and sleep for four hours before he had to wake up, feed, then rush back to the store to work a morning shift for his grandmother. He hadn’t been expecting that shift, either, but he couldn’t say no to her when she’d asked if she could go see her new grandniece, born during the night.

Gram made it back in earlier than promised, but after the morning rush of folks on their way to work and school running in for coffee, sausage biscuits, and gas, he’d been dead on his feet before nine AM, so when she arrived just after eleven, he was barely standing. He’d made it home by noon, but he was so worn out, legs aching from running around the last several hours, he wasn’t ready to move from his comfortable car seat.

Shane picked up his phone, but in his tired stupor, he hadn’t charged it, so it’d died on the drive home. He sighed, hoping he hadn’t missed anything important. He also hoped he hadn’t missed anything from Johnny. He knew their time was short, so not being able to go to him last night had been disappointing. Especially since he’d worn that jockstrap from the back of his underwear drawer just for the purpose and gotten himself all worked up beforehand.

His dead phone’s blank screen mocked him. That did it. He needed to check on his dad, and his bed was calling him for a nice power nap before afternoon feeding. Then maybe he’d be able to catch up with Johnny. He wanted to thank him again for making dinner. The taco soup had made him nostalgic, and annoyingly, the fact Johnny had left him a bowl and done the dishes had given him stupid damn warm-tingles.

He stumbled clumsily from his Jeep and made his way in the back door, putting his phone on the charger in the kitchen. Again, the house smelled of recently cooked food, but he was too tired to stop and search it out, much less sit to eat. He might never get up from the table if he got a bellyful of food.
