Liam led a tall, middle-aged man wearing a black hooded top and cargo pants towards Kate. The man looked imposing and carried a dark green duffle bag in his right hand.

“Kate, this is Major Richard Barton,” Liam said. “Major, this is Kate Barrett.”

She stood up and shook the Major’s hand. It was a firm handshake. “Nice to meet you,” she said, noticing his scars. It looked like he’d suffered from horrendous burns to the entire left side of his face. She could only assume the eyepatch over his left eye resulted from the same injury.

“Nice to meet you, sir,” the Major said, placing the duffle bag on the floor.

“Oh. I’m sorry,” Kate replied. “Nice to meet you, sir.”

“I didn’t get commissioned for nothing, you know,” he said. “Now, what’s the deal here, Liam? Why have you dragged me halfway around the world to be in this cashed-up sand pit?”

She recognised the accent immediately. “You’re Australian!” she interrupted.

“Yes,” the Major said. “But that doesn’t answer my question, does it?”

Liam jumped in. “Major, Kate needs some basic weapons and tactics training, and she needs it fast. I’ve asked you here, as I know you’re one of the best, and I’m certain that if anyone can get her up to speed quickly, it’s you.”

The Major screwed up his face in disgust. “Jesus Christ, Liam. No one likes an arse-licker, mate. How long have I got?”

Liam looked at the date on his watch. “We need to be out of here in… at the most, two weeks.”

“If you need to go, then you go,” the Major said. “But she stays with me until I say she is ready. Is that understood?”

Liam nodded. “Understood.”

The Major clearly outranked him. She didn’t know how. There wasn’t any apparent ranking system going on, but the Major seemed to demand respect.

“Where are you from in Australia?” Kate asked.

“A town on the east coast called Shoalwater Bay.”

“Really? That’s not far from me! I’m from Brisbane.”

“That’s great, love,” the Major said, looking around the tent and seemingly uninterested in her attempt to start a conversation. “Now, where can I set up?”

“You can use the room at the back if you like?” Liam said.

“Perfect,” he said, picking up the duffle bag. “Do we have access to a range?”

“We do,” Liam said. “There’s one 15 minutes north of Dubai, owned by the Armed Forces. They know us. We’ve used it a few times before.”

“Very good. Kate, come with me.”

She followed him into the room she had been using as a bedroom at the back of the tent.

“So, let me tell you how this is going to work,” he said. “You are going to learn some basic special weapons and tactics. My intent is that within a fortnight, you will be semi-proficient with at least two different firearms. Have you handled any sort of weapon before?”

She shook her head. “No. I hate guns.”

He scowled back at her. “No, sir.”

“Shit! I mean, no, sir… I hate guns.”

“Okay, so
