Moving her things into the main librarian’s office felt strange, so Diane waited more than a month after Stanley retired before moving into his old office.

Along with the title and the responsibility came a primary assistant. Diane had not thought about that until after Stanley was gone, and then she had to decide what to do about it. There were several assistant librarians on staff, but she needed an assistant, not an assistant librarian. Stanley had handled all the personnel issues, and that was one subject they had not discussed. She went to the office at city hall where she had originally filled out her own employment paperwork.

“Diane, it is so nice to see you again. How’s everything over at the library?” Miriam White was a middle-aged woman with white curly hair bobbed around her chubby face. Diane had only met her twice, and that was over two years ago, yet she still remembered her name.

“Hi, Miriam, everything is great. I’m impressed you still remember me.”

“Why wouldn’t I, dear? After all, you’re our new librarian.” She smiled. “What can I do for you?”

Diane hesitated a bit before beginning and then started. “Stanley and I never talked about this subject and I am not really sure where to go . . .”

“Diane, have a seat,” Miriam said, motioning to the chair in front of her desk.

Diane did as told and then twirled her hair between her fingers as she continued her query. “I need to hire an assistant and . . .”

“Is that what this is all about? Why didn’t you say so?” Miriam laughed out loud. Her whole body shook as she laughed. “That’s easy. Here I thought this was something serious you were bringing to me.”

Diane exhaled. She hadn’t even realized she’d been holding her breath.

“You just need to fill out this form.” Miriam scooted a piece of paper across the desk to Diane. “And then return it to me, and I’ll do the rest. That’s assuming the city council approves the new head.”

“New head?” Diane asked.

“Yes, dear, who do you think pays your salary?”

Diane’s perplexed look told Miriam she had no idea.

“Here’s a really quick lesson on civics, Diane. The library and all of its staff is part of the annual city budget; therefore, any new personnel has to be approved by the city council. So before I can search for a new assistant for you, I need to have the new person approved.”

“I understand all that, Miriam,” Diane answered politely. “But, if Stanley is gone and I took his place, doesn’t that mean my getting an assistant isn’t really an additional head? It’s sort of like replacing me?”

Miriam smiled broadly. “You know, Diane, I think you know more about politics than you’re letting on to!”

Diane simply smiled back.

“Go ahead and fill out that form, then let me know what exactly you’re looking for and I’ll post the position. We need to post it on the internal city listing first so anyone who is already employed as a
