Chapter 31
“HEY, THESE THINGS HAPPEN , sad as it is.” Jim, who was one of her guests, had paused at the front door as he and his wife were leaving for the day. “We just feel very bad that your aunt met with this type of an end. She was a special woman.”
His wife nodded agreement. “We wouldn’t have canceled because of her death, even though it might not have been an accident. We were just happy that you’re taking over and keeping the B and B open.”
“Thanks,” Abby said. “I appreciate your support.” She hesitated, struggling to keep her composure. “My aunt’s death was tragic, but accident or not, I’m sure it was a random thing. My aunt didn’t have an enemy in the world, no one who’d want to harm her.”
“Yeah,” Jim said, agreeing. “She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Jim’s wife stepped forward and gave Abby a quick hug. “We love this B and B and I know the other couple who are staying for the weekend feel the same way.”
“That’s what they said at breakfast,” Jim added.
“And we’re sorry about your other reservation being canceled,” his wife said. “I doubt you’ll see much of that happening in the future. People understand.”
Abby thanked them again, watching as they headed out the door. She just hoped they were right, especially when word got out that the killer was still out there, maybe still in Carterville.
She went back into the house to finish cleaning the kitchen. Both couples were gone until late afternoon and she welcomed the chance to fill her mental well with a little solitude. As she worked, Abby listened to FM radio music and found herself daydreaming of Bud and his kisses. Was he as attracted to her as she was to him? Although he’d been the one to break off their embrace, she’d sensed that he hadn’t wanted to, that he was a passionate man who would be an exciting lover. He was the opposite of Sam.
Sam. The image of him was like cold water on her warm thoughts of Bud. But at least her earlier stress had slipped away, and she anticipated having a shower now that the guests were out of the house for a few hours.
Maybe Jim and his wife were right. Everything would settle down.
And she would make it after all. Maybe she would even find love.
