Las Vegas, NV

For over an hour, Ruby, the prostitute involved in the incident at the Bellagio, had been questioned in the interview room. Up to that point, she had been tight-lipped and had refused to answer any of the various questions put to her by Gail or Max. Tom Buckner, hotel security manager at the Bellagio, had also been unable to coerce her into providing information. Officer Ortiz stood silently by the door.

“Tom, would you and Officer Ortiz please step outside for a few minutes?” Gail asked, her voice calm.

As soon as the door latched clicked, Gail leaned close to Ruby’s face; Gail’s demeanor changed. Her eyes narrowed, and her voice was harsh. “OK, bitch, I’m tired of fucking around with you. Out with it. Who was the trick you were with? I want to know everything he said. Everything.”

“Listen,” Ruby replied, “I told you he said his name was Sol Jones. He got too kinky for me, and I left. That was about it. What the fuck is going on here? I’ve been rousted before but not like this.”

“You left out a few minor details,” Gail said as she glared at Ruby. “Your black eye and split lip, for instance. You’d better start providing me some detail, or I’ll fuck up that pretty face some more. Got that?”

Ruby’s mouth wrinkled up, and her face was florid when she said, “Bitch! What’s this all about?”

Gail slammed her hand on the table and said in a stern tone, “Damn it! Who was he? What did he say?”

“Why should I help you? What’s in it for me?”

“We need your help, Ruby,” Max said, looking deep into her eyes. “It’s very important. We’ll keep you out of this if you help us. If you don’t help us, you’ll be in the middle, and your name will be all over the place. We’ll spread the word around that you are providing us a list of all your tricks, along with anything else we can come up with. There’ll be a few new charges as well.”

“You asshole! What gives?” Ruby asked. Having played this game before, Ruby wanted something in return. She was not willing to tell all just yet.

Max’s eyes narrowed as he stared into her eyes.

“He said his name was Sol Jones, a Syrian,” Ruby said. “Lived in the United States for the last year or so. He mostly bragged a lot, trying to impress me. I didn’t particularly like him, but his money was very good. Didn’t pay any attention to what he said.”

“Why was he in Las Vegas?” Gail asked, steely eyed.

“He said he was working for his cousin and starting a new job, making a lot of money.”

“His cousin. Would that be Haris Jamil?”

“Yeah.”

Stone faced, Max asked, “What was the job?”

“Hell, I don’t know. I wasn’t paying any attention to him. Then he started doing that Muslim thing—washing and Islamic prayer ritual—and I got scared. I just wanted out of there.”

“Where was the job?” Gail asked, her brow furrowed.
