Chapter Thirteen

‘For Chrissake,’ Alysha was on the point of hysteria. ‘We ain’t fucking done nothing, and Tink’s been –’

‘Just shut up,’ Alison gave her a little shake as she stood her up. ‘Keep whatever it is that you want to say until we get to the station,’ Alysha struggled while she was manhandled into the back of her car, and Alison dumped her so she landed on top of Panther and Lox, who were both also kicking and shouting.

Alysha calmed down and made a last plea. ‘Please don’t do this. Tink’s in a very bad way. Every second counts finding her, and you’re wasting –’

‘I told you to shut up.’

‘We ain’t done nothing. We’ve been helping you,’ Panther shouted leaning her large head out of the back window of the car.

‘Not according to my search of your flat.’

As Alison pressed the window closed, the penny dropped with Alysha. She screwed her forehead fretfully, then lowered her eyes and nodded as she rubbed her lips together, then she said, ‘We had only just found that knife. Amber Townes and Summer Ripley will back us up. Get them on the blower,’ she told Alison. ‘They found it, and called us, but Tink called us then. She were in a state. We never had time to –’

‘Just shut up, save it for the station,’ Alison had the back door open now and was pushing both Panther and Alysha’s legs to get them in so she could close the door. Two burly police came to help.

‘We went and got it down near Waters Lane,’ Alysha persisted, as Alison pushed at her. ‘After Amber rang, and told us there was a knife there. We were gonna talk to Georgia and give it her, but then Tink rang,’ she said again. ‘Maxted was in the hospital.’ She turned her body and offered her pocket to Alison. ‘Call Amber, she’ll –’

Alison pulled the phone from Alysha’s pocket. ‘Save it,’ she told Alysha.

Alysha shouted again. ‘Check the call history. Her number’ll come up, ’cos she rang me just before Tink did, like I said, an’ told us ’bout the knife. Ring her, and she’ll tell you the same.’

Alison walked around to the driver’s side, slid in and then scrolled down, and found the number as Alysha said she would. She looked at Alysha, then pressed the green Go button against Amber’s number.

Amber was silent as Alison reeled off her rank and questions, then she heard Alysha shouting across the car to tell her to tell Alison the truth.

‘Yeah, I found the knife. I folded it in bubble wrap an’ called Alysha because I didn’t know what else to do. Alysha come down a few minutes later and took the knife away.’

Alysha shouted across the car to Amber to go and get Karen from the station, as she, Lox, and Panther would be there a while. ‘Give the police your statement, Amber, mate, then get Karen, make sure she gets safe and fed.’

Alison clicked off in the middle of Alysha shouting instructions to Amber.
