Chapter 9

“Are you sure you’re ready to do this, Ben?” Grant asked as he helped Ben to his SUV. Dr. Sam had cleared him to be up and about.

Ben nodded. “My mother said that she was going to be the only one home, and she told the staff not to say anything to Jenner. I need my textbooks for school, and I should get my laptop, too. I didn’t get a chance to grab it. I paid for it myself and kept the receipt, so Jenner can’t say I’m stealing.” Ben frowned, remembering the tense conversation he’d had by phone with his mother the day before. He had tried to call the woman several times, but the staff said she wasn’t available. When Ben finally spoke with her, she agreed to let him come get his things so long as Grant was there, too.

Grant made a small noise. “We can replace the laptop and the books.” He reasoned.

Ben shook his head. “But I can’t replace all of my past coursework or my notes and papers for my classes. Even if I get notes from someone else, they won’t be mine. I like my notes.”

Grant laughed. “I understand that. I was the same way.” He started the car and made the drive to Anson Jenner’s house. Ben sighed when the large house came into view. Though the neighborhood was close to Grant’s, Ben already preferred Grant’s quiet, family-friendly neighborhood, to the pretentious gated community Jenner lived in.

Ben instructed Grant to park by the garage door, and he used his access code to go in through the kitchen. He was surprised Jenner didn’t change the code. Maybe he thought Ben wouldn’t come back?

Grant held his hand when they walked into the house and up to Ben’s bedroom. Ben gathered his school supplies from his desk, while Grant pulled some clothing from his closet and put it into a big duffle bag. Ben paused when he found a small photo he had buried inside a pencil case. He felt Grant’s arms wrap around him from behind while he studied the photo.

“It’s me and my dad,” Ben said, showing Grant the picture. “I think it was at my dad’s office.” Ben was grinning and missing some teeth. His dad had him lifted up into his arms while they smiled for the camera.

“I know,” Grant said, kissing Ben’s neck. “I was there that day.”

“You were? I remember seeing you at the office, but I don’t remember when this was taken.” Ben said, turning a bit to look at Grant’s face. A small flush colored his cheeks.

“I was young and just starting out for your dad. He introduced me to you when you came in to visit. He was so proud of you. Everyone at the office knew you. We all loved you.” Grant explained. Ben turned in Grant’s arms so they were face to face. “I am fourteen years older than you, Ben.” Grant pointed out, kissing Ben’s neck.

“Much closer to my age than yours, Ben,” Patricia Jenner pointed out from the doorway.
