Chapter Eight
The wolf stood and observed Nathaniel through the glass. He was unsure why he had felt the need to return. It was unfortunate that the boy would have to be sacrificed, but it was necessary.
Nate was tied to the chair, blubbering, shaking. There was a large screen playing a constant round of images in front of him. Heterosexual couples and women interspersed with pictures of naked men. The odd wolf. His hands were tied to probes giving off electrical shocks to time with the images of the wolf and the men. Apparently they used ice on humans but the doctor had said a wolf had a higher pain threshold.
The wolf curled his lip in distaste, and was suddenly reminded of something he’d heard as a cub at school. The end justifies the means. The teacher hadn’t meant it as a good thing though. His life used to be so simple. The supreme Alpha and his ridiculous ways would be the downfall of the werewolves. They had been close to being locked up as savages barely two years ago. Nothing good would ever come of interaction with the humans and it had to be stopped.
The end would justify the means.
The screen turned off and the room went dark. Nate was left to sit there. The door opened and the doctor walked in. He saw the wolf watching the treatment. “He doesn’t know whether the treatment is finished or just paused. He only knows the treatment will finish when I walk in the room. It’s always me who unties him.”
“To increase dependence?”
The doctor rubbed his hands gleefully. “It’s working perfectly. You saw the press conference?”
The wolf didn’t reply, but Jerard was used to oneway conversations. “He would agree to anything I say.” Jerard paused. “We really need another one.”
The wolf frowned. “I thought you said that the subject was easily swayed because psychologically he was already vulnerable.”
“I understand he has a mate...”
The wolf snarled and Jerard took a hurried step back. “I merely meant that surely the mate will be suffering his absence. I’m sure I could increase that suffering by getting Nathaniel to reject him. That may give us another dependent subject.”
“No. We need the wolves to be convinced he is here of his own free will. If another wolf disappears, they may search for him with more vigor. Do not forget the reason we have escaped the Alphas’ notice so far is because Nathaniel is universally disliked because of the shooting. I do not want to incur the Alpha’s wrath by taking a popular wolf. Too soon, it will interfere with our plans.”
Jerard licked his lips nervously. “Now that they know where he is, what are your orders should they come for him?”
“They will not take him without his consent. Blaze has too high a profile to go around kidnapping people. He has to think of the image of his wolves.” The wolf turned and regarded Jerard slowly. “You need to make sure that when they come to speak to him, Nate is convincing.
