“What are you doing, Khiderian? Have you learned nothing from previous experience?”

Khiderian looked straight ahead at the old woman in front of him, refusing to blink despite her blindness. It would show weakness to himself, and even that he would not allow in her presence. “Was it necessary to drag me here, Krystaline?” He looked around at the blue-tinged forest he and the witch stood in the middle of. To most it was freezing and scarier than their worst nightmare. It had never affected him at all. “You could have spoken to me telepathically instead of taking me away from the woman I’m supposed to protect.”

“Now that you’ve allowed her a doorway into your mind?” Krystaline laughed, the sound menacing as her form flickered, revealing a momentary glimpse of a younger woman with flowing platinum hair and vivid blue eyes. He’d seen it happen before, but never commented on it, sure it was another secret he wasn’t supposed to know. Upper management already thought he knew too much. “She managed to get in your mind before without you helping her along. Now you’ve just lain out a doormat for her to step over any time she wants to get herself killed… or learn things she isn’t privileged to know.”

“She knows better than to cross into my mind now. Our telepathic discussions will remain between only us.”

“I wish I had that confidence.” The old—or young, depending on which form was her true self—witch said on a sigh. “Your mission is to train her, keep her from doing anything foolish, and use her to save Jacob Porter.”

“That’s what I’m doing.”

“Is it?” She grinned. “I understand you find her attractive, Khiderian, and I realize how much of an inconvenience it must be to spend so much time with someone who makes you feel—”

“I’m not stupid.” Heat grew behind Khiderian’s eyes. “I’m also not a schoolboy. I can separate my attraction for her from the job.”

“Can you? Can you survive this time if you have to kill another drac chemare you’ve foolishly allowed yourself to grow attached to?” She cocked her head to the side. “You nearly lost everything you’ve worked for the last time. You won’t be given another second chance to rectify your mistake.”

This time, Khiderian laughed, the sound brittle and scathing at the same time. “As I am constantly reminded.”

“You are lucky. Surely you realize this? Your brothers and sisters could have destroyed you for your past transgressions.”

They could have tried. Khiderian ground his teeth together instead of speaking his mind. “If you only brought me here for a tongue lashing, Krystaline, I’m going to have to disappoint you. I’m working.”

“Which is why I brought you here.” The frail looking woman folded her arms across her chest. “You are nearing Dunn. It’s time to train Marilee for what she must do.”

Unease gnawed at Khiderian’s stomach, scraping the sides savagely. “You never really told me what her task is supposed to be other than locating him.” Which, miraculously, she’d done without calling the demon out.
