Fifteen: Vision

TURNS OUT, THINGS moved fast when Michael was excited and had the power of a ten-year-old prince behind him. Before James could offer much protest, he was led upstairs, three flights up, six doors down, to an unfamiliar hallway. Michael seemed suitably impressed by Tyrian’s lab, and in honesty James was impressed it even existed, and some kind of genius child had been made with his paltry genetic contribution to the human race.

“Lie down.” Michael said firmly, guiding James onto a table. He twisted James’s head to the side to reveal his port, much to Tyrian’s interest, as he began to explore the broken skin and metal with tiny little fingers. “Do I even want to know where you got those meds?”

“My tutor and I did three palm interfaces and a nanobot repair last week. I’ve never done a neural interface before.”

“I hope I can fix the chip,” Michael muttered. “Holy fuck, you’ve got a lot of high-end equipment.”

“Language,” James muttered, getting no notice. They were lost in their world of tech, and he had simply become another body on the table—not that he was entirely upset with that. “Are you sure we have to do this right now?”

“I’m heading back to Scion in the morning,” Tyrian answered. “I want to see what it looks like.”

James felt the sharp sting of a hypo in his shoulder, yet again, and then nothing. The room twisted and spun around him, and slowly, the excited technobabble was drowned out by that same nothingness.

It could have been hours or days, but James’s bet was on the former. When he opened his eyes, James saw only blinding white pain that drove them closed again. Michael snapped to attention beside him. “James!” he called out loudly, his fingers wrapping around James’s wrist, holding tight against his pulse point.

James’s tongue felt like it was glued to the roof of his mouth, but his voice managed a few gravelly words. “Yeah, I’m up…I’m up…shit hurts.”

“Don’t open your eyes yet. I’ll turn off the lights.” Before Michael had even finished talking, he was up and across the room. “Okay,” he called out, his fast steps echoing on the tile floor. “Open them slowly.”

James didn’t have the heart to tell him he’d already attempted to look into what seemed to be the surface of a blazing sun. Instead, he did as he was told. Slowly, James opened one eye and then the other, focusing on the swimming shadows above him. Then, Michael lowered the table and leaned over him. For a long moment, he was nothing but a blob of purple with blond hair and a little moonlight catching on his glasses, reflecting back at him. “Blurry,” James muttered, realizing Michael was pushing a cold metal bottle into his hand.

“Drink,” Michael said, not moving. “You’ve been out for a while; you’re probably pretty thirsty.” His voice held a note of excitement at the fact that while James couldn’t make out anything but dimly lit blobs, he could see more than before.
