Chapter 12

The phone woke me up in the morning. I looked at the clock; it was 10 a.m., but it was also Saturday morning. I grabbed the phone.

“Hello,” I said groggily.

“Katy?” It was Andrew.

“Yes.”

“I had hoped you would call when you got in. Did you get my note?”

“I didn't get home until late, and wasn't in any real shape to be coherent,” I said.

“I see. Do you have plans for the day?”

“Why?”

“I thought maybe we could go to lunch and talk.”

I sighed. “Sounds OK to me.”

“Good.” He ignored my lukewarm acceptance. “I'll pick you up at noon.”

I got up and struggled into the bathroom. Looking in the mirror, I groaned. I looked like the morning after the night before.

By the time Andrew got there I was feeling a bit better about myself. Careful makeup covered the worst of the bruising.

“You're looking a lot better,” he said as he held open the car door for me.

I touched my face. “I feel self-conscious about the bruises.”

He touched them gently. “They hardly show.”

He didn't say anything more until he had turned the car around and was headed into town.

“Katy, I wanted to explain about the other night.”

“You don't have to, Andrew,” I said breezily. “We don't have exclusive rights to each other. You see other people. So do I.”

Andrew raised an eyebrow at me. “Is that where you were last night?”

“I don't think that's any of your business. I don't demand to know where you are every moment.”

Andrew was silent for a few minutes. Then he nodded once. “OK. But I still want to explain. I'm not seeing Gloria, Katy. When the cops called and told her, she was upset. She called me, and I volunteered to drive her down. That's it.”

Sure it was. I acknowledged that might be all it was from his point of view. But I was not totally devoid of female instincts, and mine said Gloria wanted him. She was clever enough to work it out so they just ‘happened’ to spend a lot of time together.

“I believe you, Andrew,” I said. “But are you sure that's all it is for Gloria?”

“Of course, it is.” Andrew sounded impatient. “Maybe, there were some feelings once. But we're past that now. Have been for years. Besides she loved Bob; she hasn't recovered from his death yet.”

“OK.” But I wasn't convinced.

Andrew parked in front of the Country Club. He got out and opened my door for me. I let him. What the hell, I thought.

“Have you found out anything more about Andersons' burglary?” Andrew asked as we were seated. We had a table by the window that overlooked the golf course.

“No, I've been too busy sorting out the aftermath of my own break-in.”

“What?” I had forgotten that Andrew didn't know.

“When I got home from the hospital I found my own place had been burglarized. They didn't take anything.”

“You think they were looking for those papers of Bob's,” Andrew summarized.

I nodded. “I don't think it could be anything else. Besides....” I started to tell him about Johnny and then thought better of it.
