When they returned, Lorne distributed the sandwiches to her colleagues. Joanna was the one who got off her backside to make the coffee for all of them. Back at Tinaâs home, Sallyâs had remained untouched, so a fresh brew was most welcome.
Lorne broke off a sliver of her ham and cheese sandwich and slid it across the desk to Sally on a napkin. âOnly a small piece, you canât run on fresh air all day.â
Smiling, Sally scoffed the granary snack and thought as she chewed.
âWhat are you thinking, or is that too obvious?â Lorne asked.
âThereâs more to this than meets the eye, but without a definitive answer about the identification, weâre up shit creek. Sod it, we should have dropped over to the lab while we were out.â
Her partner squirmed. âMy fault, I was thinking about my stomach as usual.â
âNonsense, donât ever think that, weâre entitled to eat, even if itâs on the go. Jordan, did you manage to ring the lab earlier, as requested?â
He slapped his hands over his eyes and groaned. âShit, I knew there was something else I had to do, boss. I suppose I got distracted with the information I was collecting and it slipped my mind.â He reached for the phone on his desk. âIâll do it right away.â
âNo, you wonât, I will. Carry on, folks. Iâll have a chat with the pathologist, and then weâll have an open discussion about the information weâve gathered so far.â Sally picked up her mug and carried it into her office. She sat behind her desk and glanced at the cloudless blue sky, envious of those who were able to have outdoor jobs and werenât stuck inside every day.
Daft mare, Iâve only just come back. Granted, I was in and out of houses all morning and mostly driving around in my car, but at least I felt some rays on my face.
She dialled the number of the lab. One of the male technicians answered the call and told her that Pauline would ring her back within ten minutes as she was in the process of finishing off a PM, not related to her investigation. Sally sat there, waiting, tapping her pen on the desk. After boredom hit the next level, she picked up her mobile and called Simon. âHey, you, itâs me. Can you talk?â
âFor five minutes. Weâre waiting for the estate agent to show her face.â
âLikewise, I mean Iâve only got five minutes. Iâm awaiting a call back from Pauline, the new pathologist.â
He laughed. âIâm well aware who Pauline is.â
âSorry, my mind is in some kind of vortex this afternoon.â
âHow come? Do you need to chat about it?â
âNot really, itâs all in hand. Iâll fill you in when I get home tonight. I needed to hear your voice and know that everything was going well with you today.â
âIt is. Another project finished. Tony is going around making a snagging list now.â
âIs this the property that was vandalised a few months ago?â
âNo, that one sold last week. This is the house we made into three one-bedroom flats.
