‘I was thinking about where I could take you. Somewhere you could really let your hair down,’ I say, as we step out of the plane and into a black limo. ‘And then I realized: you say you felt like you had to grow up too fast. I never had a proper childhood either. Now, we’re looking after a kid all the time, which is awesome and rewarding and everything else… but it’s exhausting, right? Don’t we deserve to kick back and relax for a night? And what better way to do that than at Disney World?’

Ember laughs. ‘You are insane, Zoar March. Most billionaires would whisk their dates off to a secluded desert island, or go for a weekend in Paris, or shopping in Milan, or… I don’t know… any number of exotic, elegant locations. But… Disney World? Are you freaking kidding me?’ She shakes her head, giggling, then looks at me more seriously. ‘There’s something kinda romantic about it too, of course. And this limo is pretty fancy too…’

‘Just you wait,’ I tell her. ‘The romance hasn’t even started yet.’

‘So that is what this is, then?’ she asks. ‘A romantic date?’

I raise my eyebrows at her, and then reach for her hand. ‘I’m sorry I’ve been so distant the past week. I wanted to give you space, after everything happened with your stepfather… It was pretty intense, what happened that day. Getting married, getting naked, your stepfather trying to claw my eyes out… Didn’t want it to get confusing for you.’

Ember looks at me for a while, brow knitted. ‘Isn’t it for me to decide whether or not I’m confused?’

I rub the back of my neck. ‘Sure. This is coming out wrong. I just…’

Ember reaches for my hand, and gives it a squeeze. ‘I know how effed up the last few weeks have been for you too. And I appreciate you not wanting to put any extra pressure on me. I just hoped you weren’t trying to avoid me, that’s all.’

‘Avoid you? Jesus. If you knew the truth…’

She looks out the window, watching the passing traffic for a while, and then says: ‘I’d like to know the truth. I’d like to know everything you’re thinking.’

‘The truth is,’ I say, taking a deep breath. I look over at the limo driver, but there’s a thick glass screen between us and him. He can’t hear a word we’re saying. ‘The truth is, I can’t get you out my fucking head. All I can think about is you.’ I look into her huge green eyes, glittering like emeralds. ‘I can’t stop obsessing over how good it felt that night, when I made you come… and how much I want to make you come again… and how much I want to fuck you.’

‘And why is that?’ asks Ember, half-smiling. ‘Something exciting about the idea of fucking your nanny? Or fucking some poor girl from the Bronx when you’re a fancy billionaire? Some kind of power trip or whatever?’
